Product Description
Nashi is a northeastern wind which occurs in winter on the Persian Gulf, especially at the entrance of the gulf. These boot cuffs are just the thing for a winter outflow of wind as this. Wear so just the top of them show, allowing the cable and seed stitch to act as ribbing or show off a little more of your texture by letting some of the base peek out from your boots, too. They are quick to knit and make great gifts for varied people, being sized from child to women’s large/men’s medium.
Finished Measurements: approximately 12.25 (15.75, 17.5) inches / 31 (40, 44.5) cm circumference
approximately 5 (6.25, 7.25) inches / 13 (16, 18.5) cm in length
Skills Required: Knitting in the round, increasing and decreasing.
Nashi Boot Cuffs by Ranée Mueller
What Is Being Made
Nashi boot cuffs are quick-to-knit winter accessories inspired by the Nashi, a northeastern wind that occurs during winter on the Persian Gulf. These cuffs are designed to be worn at the top of boots, with flexible styling options: wear them so only the top shows, allowing the textured stitches to act as ribbing, or display more of the base by letting it peek out from your boots. The pattern is sized to fit a range of wearers, from children through women's large and men's medium, making them versatile gifts or personal projects.
Techniques and Construction
Nashi boot cuffs are knitted in the round, a fundamental technique for creating seamless, tubular garments. This method eliminates the need for seaming and creates a smooth, professional finish ideal for leg wear. The in-the-round construction is worked on circular needles or double-pointed needles, allowing for continuous rounds of knitting without turning the work. The pattern incorporates cable techniques, which create raised, twisted textures that add visual interest and structural definition to the cuffs.
Stitches Used
- Cable stitch: Creates raised, twisted texture that forms the primary decorative element of the boot cuffs
- Seed stitch: A fundamental textured stitch that alternates knit and purl stitches to create a bumpy, woven appearance, providing visual contrast and textural variety
Yarn and Materials
Nashi boot cuffs are worked in fingering weight yarn (4-ply), a lightweight yarn that knits to a fine gauge. The sample shown was knitted with Malabrigo Mechita, a 100% Merino wool yarn available in 420-yard skeins. Yardage requirements vary by size: approximately 195 yards for the child size, 310 yards for the medium size, and 395 yards for the large size. Knitters will need US size 1 (2.25 mm) needles in their preferred style for knitting in the round—whether circular needles, double-pointed needles, or another preferred method—along with a cable needle for executing cable stitches and stitch markers to track pattern repeats and size increases.
Skill Level
Nashi boot cuffs are rated as a beginner-friendly pattern, making them an excellent project for knitters new to in-the-round construction and cable techniques. The straightforward construction and quick completion time make these cuffs an ideal introduction to these essential knitting skills.
