Mystical Unicorn Hoodie by Jane Burns

What is Being Made

The Mystical Unicorn Hoodie is a children's knitted sweater with an integrated hood, designed by Jane Burns as a downloadable PDF pattern. This garment is sized for children ranging from 1-2 years through 10-11 years, with actual chest measurements from 24 inches to 33.5 inches and lengths from 14 inches to 22 inches. The hoodie features a whimsical unicorn-themed design created through colorwork and embellishment techniques suitable for intermediate-level knitters.

Craft and Techniques

This project uses knitting as the primary construction method. The pattern employs multiple techniques to create the unicorn design and decorative elements. The garment is worked flat using straight needles for the main body pieces, with the option to use long circular needles for easier handling, particularly when working the hood sections. The pattern incorporates colorwork techniques using multiple yarn colors to build the design. Hair details are created using either a crochet hook or DPN needles, adding dimensional embellishment to the finished hoodie.

Stitches Used

The Mystical Unicorn Hoodie begins with fundamental knitting stitches. The ribbed edging is created using 1x1 ribbing, worked by alternating knit and purl stitches in the pattern *K1, p1; rep from * to end. This classic ribbed stitch provides stretch and structure at the garment edges, ensuring the hoodie maintains its shape during wear. The ribbing is worked on 3.25mm needles before transitioning to larger 4mm needles for the main body stockinette stitch sections, which form the primary fabric of the sweater.

Materials and Yarn

The Mystical Unicorn Hoodie pattern calls for DK weight yarn, a versatile medium weight suitable for children's garments. The primary yarn is Stylecraft Special DK (100g/295m per ball), with Yarn A in Cream (1005) requiring 2-4 balls depending on size. Five additional Stylecraft Special DK colors create the colorwork design: Yarn B in Apricot (1026), Yarn C in Lemon (1020), Yarn D in Spring Green (1316), Yarn E in Cloud Blue (1019), and Yarn F in Wisteria (1432), each requiring 1 ball across all sizes. An accent yarn, Sirdar Snuggly Pearls DK (50g/170m per ball) in Yarn G Pearly Pink (302), adds a special touch with 1 ball needed for all sizes.

The pattern requires 3.25mm straight needles for the ribbed cast-on and initial rows, with 4mm straight needles for the main body knitting. Long circular needles in both sizes are recommended as an alternative, particularly for working the hood in the round. Additional tools include 3.25mm double-pointed needles for working small circumferences, a 4.5mm crochet hook for creating the hair embellishment, or alternatively 4mm DPN needles if preferring to knit the hair details rather than crochet them.

Pattern Sizing

  • 1-2 years: To fit 53cm chest; finished chest 61cm; length 36cm; sleeve length 30cm

Difficulty Level

Rated as intermediate difficulty, this pattern is suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to progress beyond basic projects. The intermediate classification reflects the combination of techniques required: managing multiple yarn colors for colorwork, working with various needle sizes, constructing a fitted garment with shaping, and incorporating embellishment techniques such as crochet or DPN hair work

e-knitting :D

I didn't use the recommended wool as I needed to use up my Lockdown Stash (and I wanted a fluffier and more glittery finish). I noticed there were some complaints about the pattern being wrong but I didn't find any problem so maybe it's been edited. Don't be put off by the photo as it looks a bit 'old fashioned' - It looks great! (I apologise for the poor photos :) Oh yes - and I don't crochet but had a go. I have kept some wool so. if after washing the loose their curl. I'll make a different...

Unicorn hoody pattern VERY POOR containing several major mistakes.

Many major errors in the pattern. I emailed the designer regarding some of the errors but she failed to respond to my email. This is not something I’d expect when paying £4.50 for a pattern and having to print it myself.

Always excellent

A few minor errors in the pattern, but not enough to worry about. Looks wonderful when finished.
