My First Toe Up Knit Socks is a beginner-friendly sock knitting pattern designed by Marly Bird. This pattern creates a pair of simple, classic socks using the toe-up construction method, making it an ideal introduction to sock knitting for crafters new to the technique. The socks are adjustable in length and height, allowing customization to fit various foot sizes from children to adults.
This sock pattern incorporates three key knitting techniques that are essential to sock construction:
The primary stitch used throughout this sock pattern is stockinette stitch in the round. This classic stitch creates a smooth, flat fabric that is ideal for socks, providing comfort against the skin and a professional appearance. The pattern recommends working with tight stitches to enhance durability and longevity of the finished socks.
The pattern calls for sock weight yarn, with the recommended yarn being Patons Kroy Socks, a super fine weight yarn composed of 75% washable wool and 25% nylon. This blend provides durability and easy care. The yarn comes in 1.75 ounce (50 gram) balls with approximately 166 yards (152 meters) per ball. Yardage requirements are 2 to 3 balls depending on the size being knitted.
The pattern specifies a recommended gauge of 32 stitches and 42 rows equaling 4 inches in stockinette stitch in the round. Tight stitches are encouraged for sock knitting, as they contribute to the wear-resistance and longevity of the finished socks. Any sock weight yarn can be substituted, provided the gauge is matched appropriately.
The pattern offers six size options with foot circumferences ranging from 6 to 11 inches to accommodate different ages and foot sizes. Both the foot length and sock height are adjustable, providing flexibility for personalized fit. The sock height is measured as 5 inches from the top of the heel and can be modified to preference.
