My First Mittens - Beginner Baby Knitting Pattern
What Is Being Made
My First Mittens is a beginner-friendly knitting pattern designed by Myla Vayner from Myla's Knit Corner. This pattern creates adorable baby mittens in three different sizes to accommodate growing infants. The mittens are sized for babies aged 0-3 months, 3-6 months, and 6-12 months, making this pattern a versatile choice for gift-giving or creating a collection as a baby grows.
Finished Sizes
The pattern includes three size options:
- 0-3 months: 3 inches around the wrist and 3.25 inches long (before stretching)
- 3-6 months: 3.5 inches around the wrist and 3.75 inches long (before stretching)
- 6-12 months: 4 inches around the wrist and 4 inches long (before stretching)
Techniques Used
These mittens are worked flat, meaning they are knitted on straight needles rather than in the round. This flat construction method is ideal for beginners, as it eliminates the need to manage circular needles or double-pointed needles and makes it easier to maintain consistent tension throughout the project. The flat working method also simplifies shaping and finishing details.
Stitches and Abbreviations
The pattern uses fundamental knitting stitches and techniques appropriate for beginners:
- CO (cast on): The foundation method for creating stitches on the needle
- K (knit): The basic knit stitch
- P (purl): The basic purl stitch, used to create textured ribbing
- K2tog (knit 2 together): A decrease technique that combines two stitches into one
- P2tog (purl 2 together): A decrease technique using the purl stitch
- Sl1 (slip 1): Slipping one stitch without knitting or purling it, used for edge finishing
- RS (right side) and WS (wrong side): Directional references for working the pattern
Materials Required
This pattern is economical and uses minimal materials, making it perfect for beginners or for creating multiple pairs:
- Yarn: Approximately 1 ounce of medium weight yarn (number 4), which includes DK, Light Worsted, 8-Worsted, Afghan, Aran, or 10-ply varieties
- Needles: Two Size 2 (3 mm) needles and two Size 3 (3.25 mm) needles. The pattern uses two different needle sizes to create distinct gauge sections
- Additional supplies: A tapestry needle for weaving in ends and scissors for cutting yarn
Gauge
Understanding gauge is essential for achieving the correct finished size. This pattern specifies two different gauges for different sections:
- Ribbing: 9 stitches by 8 rows equals 1 inch by 1 inch when worked on Size 2 needles
- Main part: 7 stitches by 12 rows equals 1 inch by 1 inch when worked on Size 3 needles
The gauge difference between the ribbing and main sections creates a fitted cuff that hugs the baby's wrist while allowing the main body of the mitten to have a slightly looser, more comfortable fit.
Why This Pattern Is Ideal for Beginners
My First Mittens incorporates all the essential skills a new knitter needs to develop: casting on, basic stitches (knit and purl), simple decreases, and finishing techniques. The flat construction eliminates common beginner challenges, and the small project size means the pattern can be completed quickly, providing a sense of accomplishment and encouraging continued skill development in the craft of knitting.
