Product Description

My Fair Maiden is an ode to the damsels in fairy tales. This garment is a sleeveless tunic and was designed with two purposes in mind: to be worn in costume play with a full tulle skirt and princess hat like a hennin, or to be worn in every day wear like over a slim fitting shirt with a denim skirt and print tights. It features characteristics of medieval dress, such as a high wide neckline, a slim fit in the body, and a slightly lower waistline. Beneath the waist is a short skirt with inverted box pleats. A knit ribbon (worked at a looser gauge to reduce bulk and weight but add extra drape) is tied in a bow on the back and rests on the pleats. The body of the garment, including pleats, is knit in stockinette stitch. A contrasting color edge is worked in garter stitch at the neckline. The ribbon is knit with a contrasting color in stockinette stitch and is worked horizontally at a looser gauge to create a more “ribbon-like” effect. The tunic was designed with one inch of positive ease. Yarn approx 365 (440, 520, 600, 685) yards of fingering weight yarn in MC and approx 60 yards of fingering weight yarn in CC

My Fair Maiden Knitted Children's Sweater by Meg Roke

What Is Being Made

My Fair Maiden is a knitted sweater designed for children, available in five sizes ranging from 2 to 10 years old. The finished garment features a chest circumference of 22 to 29 inches (55 to 72.5 centimeters) and a length of 14 to 20 inches (35 to 50 centimeters), depending on the selected size. This intermediate-level knitting project creates a fitted children's pullover suitable for everyday wear.

Techniques and Construction Methods

This knitting pattern employs several fundamental and intermediate techniques to construct the sweater. The garment is worked using circular needles for the body, allowing for seamless or nearly seamless construction. Double-pointed needles are incorporated for smaller circumference sections, such as sleeves or necklines, which is a standard approach in modern knitting design. The pattern utilizes stitch markers to track pattern repeats and shaping increases or decreases. Finishing techniques include grafting or binding off edges, and the optional addition of small sew-in snaps provides functional closures if desired.

Stitches and Stitch Work

While the complete stitch pattern details are not fully visible in the provided materials, the pattern incorporates fundamental knitting stitches typical of intermediate children's sweater construction. Knitters will work with increases and decreases to shape the garment at the armholes, neckline, and sleeve caps. The use of stitch holders or waste yarn indicates that stitches are held live for later grafting or three-needle binding off, a technique that creates seamless or nearly invisible seams in modern knitting design.

Yarn and Materials

The pattern specifies Canopy Fingering yarn from The Fibre Company as the recommended yarn. This fingering weight yarn is composed of 50% alpaca, 30% merino wool, and 20% bamboo, offering a blend of softness, elasticity, and breathability ideal for children's garments. Each skein contains 200 yards (183 meters) and weighs 1.75 ounces (50 grams).

Yarn requirements vary by size:

  • Sizes 2 and 4 years: 2 skeins of main color (MC) in Crocus
  • Sizes 6, 8, and 10 years: 3 to 4 skeins of main color in Crocus
  • All sizes: 1 skein of contrast color (CC) in Purple Passion

Alternatively, knitters may substitute approximately 365 to 685 yards of fingering weight yarn in the main color and approximately 60 yards in a contrast color, allowing flexibility in yarn selection while maintaining appropriate yardage for successful completion.

Needles and Notions

Circular needles in US 2 (3.25 mm) are used for the body of the sweater, while double-pointed needles in the same size accommodate smaller sections. The pattern calls for US 4 (3.75 mm) straight or circular needles for specific sections requiring a larger needle size, typically two sizes larger than the gauge needles, which creates intentional fabric texture variations or looser sections.

Essential notions include stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and shaping, a tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends and seaming, a stitch holder or spare needle for holding live stitches, and scissors. The pattern optionally incorporates 2 small sew-in snaps for functional closures, though these are not required for garment completion.
