Mumdala Dreaming by BlueBuggs
What is Being Made
The Mumdala Dreaming is a decorative crochet mandala inspired by dreamcatcher designs and symmetrical mandala patterns. This intermediate-level project combines the aesthetic appeal of traditional mandalas with a thoughtful Mother's Day theme. The finished piece features intricate geometric designs arranged in seamless symmetrical flow, making it an ideal decorative item for gifting to mothers or adding to a personal collection of handmade home décor.
Design Inspiration and Purpose
Created by designer BlueBuggs, the Mumdala Dreaming celebrates the love of mothers, nature, and symmetrical design. The pattern draws inspiration from both dreamcatcher and mandala traditions, merging these elements into a single cohesive decorative piece. Whether worked in vibrant, colourful yarns or neutral tones, this crochet decoration serves as a meaningful gift for Mother's Day or as a standalone addition to any collection of decorative textiles.
Crochet Techniques and Stitches
This intermediate crochet project employs fundamental crochet techniques to achieve its intricate mandala appearance. The pattern utilizes the magic ring method to begin the work, allowing for a seamless center point typical of mandala construction. The design incorporates single crochet stitches as a primary stitch element, with careful attention to stitch counts and spacing to maintain the symmetrical flow throughout the piece.
Key Techniques:
- Magic Ring (MR) foundation method for creating a centered starting point
- Single crochet (sc) stitches as primary stitch construction
- Space-based construction (sp) for creating openwork areas within the mandala design
- Stitch counting and tracking to maintain symmetrical pattern repeats
- Color changes to create the multi-coloured or neutral variations
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Mumdala Dreaming pattern is designed to work with DK weight yarn (also suitable for 8ply or light weight yarn). The designer used Patons Cotton Blend 8ply yarn for the original creation, with a total yardage of 35 grams. A 3.5mm crochet hook is recommended for working with DK weight yarn, though hook size should be adjusted based on your chosen yarn type to ensure proper gauge and finished dimensions.
Suggested Yarn Colors (from original design):
- 2g Pineapple (Yellow 40)
- 6g Rockmelon (Peach 47)
- 12g Wild Rose (Pink 39)
- 15g Lunar Rock (Grey 37)
- Alternative: 35g Natural (04) for a solid, neutral version
The pattern also requires a 300mm steel ring in gold as a structural component, which provides the circular frame for the mandala design. A yarn needle is necessary for weaving in ends and finishing the piece.
Pattern Format and Skill Level
The Mumdala Dreaming is provided as a downloadable PDF pattern suitable for intermediate crocheters. The pattern uses standard US crochet terminology and includes abbreviations for common crochet terms, making it accessible to crafters familiar with basic crochet techniques who are ready to tackle more complex symmetrical designs. The intermediate difficulty level reflects the precision required to maintain the mandala's symmetrical flow and intricate geometric patterning throughout the project.
