What you'll need

Product Description

A silk shawl in a simple lace pattern which starts with a regular double eyelet created by yarn overs and knitting stitches together, this then blends into a lace panel. Whilst it helps to have some lace experience, it is also a good project for someone new to lace work. The sample is made using Louisa Harding Mulberry which is a double knit yarn and 100% silk (approx. 370m needed). A yarn with no silk may not produce the same drape. The colour is Sweet Dreams (shade 29). The shawl is a traditional triangle starting from the back of the neck working downwards. Increases are on every alternate row and are by yarn overs. Finished size 160cm by 70cm, when blocked.

Mulberry Haze Shawl by Agrarian Artisan

What is Being Made

The Mulberry Haze Shawl is a traditional triangular silk shawl designed by Agrarian Artisan. This downloadable knitting pattern creates an elegant accessory featuring a combination of simple lace work and decorative eyelet details that progress from a regular double eyelet pattern into a more complex lace panel as the shawl expands.

Craft and Techniques

This is an intermediate-level knitting project that combines fundamental knitting techniques with lace work. The pattern is particularly well-suited for knitters who are new to lace construction, as it introduces lace concepts through a straightforward progression. The shawl begins with a small cast-on and grows outward in a traditional triangular silhouette, utilizing increases and strategic yarn overs to create the expanding shape and decorative patterning.

Stitches Used

  • Yarn overs (yo) – creates the decorative eyelet holes and lace openings
  • Knit stitches (k) – forms the base fabric and structure
  • Purl stitches (p) – used in even-numbered rows for texture and pattern definition
  • Knitting stitches together – creates decreases that work in conjunction with yarn overs to form the double eyelet pattern
  • Stocking stitch – the primary stitch pattern for the main fabric

Materials and Specifications

The Mulberry Haze Shawl is designed to be worked in DK weight yarn. The recommended yarn is Louisa Harding Mulberry, which is a double knit weight, 100% silk yarn in the colorway Sweet Dreams (shade 29). Approximately 370 meters of yarn is required to complete the shawl. The pattern notes that using a yarn without silk content may not produce the same drape characteristics, as the silk fiber contributes significantly to the shawl's fluid, elegant appearance when blocked.

The finished shawl achieves a blocked tension of approximately 6 stitches and 14 rows over 5 centimeters in stocking stitch, which helps determine the final dimensions and drape of the completed piece.

Pattern Format

This pattern is provided as a downloadable PDF and includes both written instructions and charted instructions for the lace pattern. The written instructions begin with a set-up section that establishes the foundation stitches, followed by row-by-row directions for constructing the shawl. Knitters are advised to read through the entire pattern before beginning to ensure understanding of the structure and progression.
