Muladhara Socks by N.kaBia
What is Being Made
The Muladhara socks are a pair of knitted socks designed in multiple sizes to fit shoe sizes 36/37 through 44/45 (European sizing). This project creates fitted, wearable socks using the traditional top-down construction method worked in the round on double-pointed needles.
Craft and Primary Technique
This is a knitting project worked entirely in the round using the circular knitting method with double-pointed needles (DPNs). The socks are constructed from the cuff downward, a common approach that allows for easy customization of length and fit. The intermediate difficulty level indicates that knitters should be comfortable with basic techniques before attempting this pattern.
Stitches Used
The Muladhara pattern employs several fundamental knitting stitches:
- Knit stitch – used throughout the leg and body of the sock
- Purl stitch – incorporated into the ribbing sections for texture and elasticity
- Ribbing (knit 2, purl 2) – worked for rounds 1 through 20 to create the cuff with stretch and recovery
- Cable work – indicated by the inclusion of a cable needle in the materials list, suggesting textured cable patterns are featured in the leg section
The pattern also incorporates charted stitch patterns, with instructions to work 30 stitches in the middle of the round following a provided chart beginning at round 21.
Color Work
The Muladhara socks feature a two-color stranded knitting technique. Knitters alternate between two solid colorways (referred to as colour A and colour B in the instructions) on alternating rounds throughout the leg section. The cuff is worked exclusively in colour A, while the leg transitions into the color-alternating pattern, creating visual interest and depth in the finished sock.
Materials and Specifications
Yarn: The pattern calls for 2 skeins of 50g fingering weight sockyarn in 4-ply construction. The specified yardage is 100g/420 meters (459 yards) total, with one skein in each of two different solid colors. Fingering weight yarn is the standard choice for sock knitting, providing appropriate drape and durability for this end-use garment.
Needles and Tools: Five double-pointed needles (DPNs) in size 2.5mm (US 1.5) are required for working the sock in the round. A cable needle is necessary for executing the cable stitch patterns featured in the leg. Two stitch markers are optional but recommended for tracking the beginning of rounds and pattern sections. A darning needle is needed for weaving in yarn ends upon completion.
Size Range
The pattern is offered in five graduated sizes accommodating European shoe sizes 36/37, 38/39, 40/41, 42/43, and 44/45. Stitch counts range from 60 stitches for the smallest size to 68 stitches for the largest, with even distribution across four needles (15–17 stitches per needle depending on size).
Construction Method
The socks are constructed using the magic loop or DPN method, with stitches cast on and divided evenly across four needles for seamless circular knitting. The cast-on tail serves as a visual marker for the beginning of rounds. The cuff begins with ribbed knitting to provide elasticity, followed by the patterned leg section worked according to the included chart.
