Product Description

Then the idea of a scarf that had been eaten by moths popped into my head. So this is my take on a shawl attacked my moths. The result is a rather unique scarf which drapes nicely around the shoulders due to the Moth Eaten sections.

Designed for use with one cake of Scheepjes Whirl.. Any similar weight yarn will work. Materials: 1 x Scheepjes Whirl or similar 4ply yarn. Approx 800m used Scissors Tapestry Needle 3.5mm hook

This Scarf started out life as a plain old rectangle. I drew up my design and it was too perfect. Too symmetrical! My mind kept looking at ways to make it a little more unique!

Moths Ate My Flower Scarf by Auburncraft Crochet Design

Project Overview

The Moths Ate My Flower Scarf is an intermediate-level crochet design created by Auburncraft Crochet Design. This downloadable PDF pattern produces a finished scarf measuring 63 inches (160cm) in length and 13½ inches (34.2cm) across the widest section, making it a generous accessory suitable for layering and styling versatility.

What Is Being Made

This project creates a decorative crochet scarf featuring floral motifs with an artistic, dimensional design. The scarf is worked in a way that incorporates popcorn stitches to create textured flower elements, giving the finished piece visual interest and depth. The design suggests a whimsical aesthetic where moths have interacted with the flower elements, creating an engaging narrative in the finished garment.

Crochet Techniques Used

The pattern employs several intermediate crochet techniques to achieve its finished look. The construction involves working with double crochet stitches as the primary stitch base, which provides structure and drape. Popcorn stitches are incorporated throughout the design to create the dimensional flower elements that give the scarf its distinctive character. The pattern also utilizes slip stitches for joining and shaping, as well as special decreasing techniques including a special double crochet decrease and skip stitches to create shaping and textural variation across the width of the scarf.

Stitches Used

  • Chain (Ch) - Foundation and spacing stitches
  • Double Crochet (Dc) - Primary structural stitch throughout the pattern
  • Popcorn Stitch (PS) - Creates the dimensional flower motifs
  • Slip Stitch (Slst) - Used for joining and finishing
  • Special Double Crochet Decrease (SDc2tog) - Creates shaping and decreases
  • Skip Stitches (Sk2Sts) - Provides spacing and openwork areas

Materials and Specifications

This scarf is worked using a 3.5mm crochet hook with 4-ply weight yarn. The pattern calls for one ball of Scheepjes Whirl Night-Time Bubbles, which provides 1000 meters (1093 yards) per 215-225 gram ball. The project uses approximately 850-850 meters of yarn, leaving roughly 150 meters (164 yards) of the variegated colorway remaining after completion.

Gauge and Finished Measurements

The gauge for this pattern is measured over double crochet stitches while the piece is blocked. The pattern requires 11 rows to 4 inches (10cm) and 28 stitches to 4 inches (10cm) when measured in double crochet. Achieving proper gauge is important for obtaining the finished dimensions of 63 inches (160cm) in length and 13½ inches (34.2cm) in width across the widest section of the scarf. Blocking is recommended to achieve accurate measurements and to showcase the texture of the popcorn stitches and overall design.

Skill Level

This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for crocheters who have mastered basic stitches and are ready to work with more complex stitch combinations. The use of popcorn stitches and special decreases requires familiarity with textured stitch techniques and the ability to follow more detailed pattern instructions.
