Product Description

The Celtic knot, in all of its many variations, is a series of knots that are overlapped or interwoven, with no definitive beginning or end. The Celtic knot of motherhood is featured on the leg of these mosaic socks. The knot depicts a parent and child embrace, the two hearts intertwined. This pattern incorporates mosaic knitting, a colorwork method where the pattern is created by slipping select stitches of the MC on CC rows. Written round-by-round instructions are provided along with a charted pattern.

What is Being Made

Motherhood Socks are an advanced intermediate knitted sock design featuring a Celtic knot motif on the leg. The Celtic knot pattern depicts a parent and child embrace with two hearts intertwined, representing the symbolic connection of motherhood. These socks are available in three sizes to fit adult foot circumferences of 8, 9, or 10 inches with 1 inch of negative ease for a secure fit.

Design and Techniques

This pattern employs several advanced knitting techniques that elevate it beyond beginner skill levels. The primary colorwork method used is slip stitch colorwork, which creates the intricate Celtic knot design on the sock leg through strategic yarn manipulation and color changes. The pattern also incorporates unique cabling techniques that add textural depth and visual interest to the sock construction.

Additional advanced techniques required include picking up stitches to transition between sections, short-row shaping to customize the fit around the heel and foot, and various decreases and increases to shape the sock properly from cuff to toe.

Stitches Used

The primary stitch base is stockinette stitch, which creates a smooth, classic fabric for the main body of the sock. The gauge for this pattern is 34 stitches and 46 rows per 4 inches when worked in stockinette stitch and blocked, providing a standard sock fabric density that works well with the specified yarn weights.

Materials and Yarn Requirements

Motherhood Socks require two contrasting colors of 4-ply sock yarn, with approximately 50 grams or more of each color needed to complete the project. The pattern is shown worked in Starsheep Nebula sock yarn in the colorway Angel's Trumpet for the main color, which is composed of Blue-faced Leicester and nylon in an 80/20 blend with 400 yards per 100 grams. The contrasting color is an Alpaca, Wool, Nylon, and Angora blend in a 60/25/12/3 ratio, offering 333 yards per 100 grams.

The 4-ply yarn weight provides excellent stitch definition for the detailed colorwork and cabling, while the fiber content blends ensure durability, warmth, and the elasticity necessary for well-fitting socks that maintain their shape through repeated wear and washing.

Sizing Information

  • Adult Small: 62 stitches, fits 8-inch foot circumference
  • Adult Medium: 70 stitches, fits 9-inch foot circumference
  • Adult Large: 78 stitches, fits 10-inch foot circumference

The pattern is designed with 1 inch of negative ease, meaning the finished sock circumference is intentionally 1 inch smaller than the foot measurement, creating a snug, secure fit that prevents slipping during wear.
