Product Description

With this easy pattern you can make a very sturdy mole, with a miners safety helmet if you like.

Size: 6 inch/ 15,5 cm sitting when made with Istex Lett Lopi and hook E / 3,5 mm.

The instructions are written in US crochet terms. The pattern contains a list of materials, tools and accessories needed. Brand and colour numbers of the needed yarn. A clear and colour coded description of how to crochet and assemble the animal. Pictures and illustrations to help getting everything right.

Materials Worsted weight yarn and an E US/3.5 mm crochet hook. You’ll need two colours of yarn, brown black (1/3 of a 100 yard skein) and oatmeal (1/10) and a bit of pink for the nose. For the eyes I’ve used 5 mm animal eyes and I needle felted a pink nose (0.3 inch/ 1 cm). You will also need fibrefill and pellets for a bit of extra weight in the body (I use Hama beads). For the miners safety hat you need two extra colours, yellow and light grey. Lopi colour numbers: 0052,1419, 1703 and 0054.

Moser the Mole Crochet Pattern

What is Being Made

Moser is a small crocheted mole toy designed by Sonja van der Wijk, available through Son's Popkes. This finished amigurumi-style doll measures approximately 4.6 inches (11.5 cm) in height, making it a charming handmade toy suitable for collectors or as a gift. The pattern produces a three-dimensional stuffed mole figure worked entirely in the round.

Crochet Techniques Used

This intermediate-level crochet pattern employs spiral construction, meaning the mole is worked continuously in rounds rather than joining each round with a slip stitch. The designer recommends using a stitch marker to track the beginning of each round, moving it up as you progress through the pattern. Color changes are incorporated into the design, with the pattern instructing crocheters to change colors in the final loop of a stitch so that the new color appears in the next stitch rather than the transition stitch itself. This technique ensures clean color work throughout the finished toy.

Stitches and Construction

While the PDF excerpt does not specify every individual stitch used, the pattern is written in standard American crochet terminology. The three-dimensional structure is achieved through typical amigurumi construction methods, which generally involve increases and decreases to shape the body, head, and limbs. Crocheters should be comfortable reading standard American crochet abbreviations and understanding how to work in continuous rounds before beginning this intermediate project.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

Yarn Weight: Worsted weight yarn is used for this pattern. The designer strongly recommends using a fuzzy yarn for the best results, specifically noting that the sample was created with Istex Lètt lopi, a 100% wool yarn. The final size of the mole will vary depending on the yarn weight chosen and the crocheter's tension, so experimentation may be necessary.

Tools Required: A crochet hook appropriate for worsted weight yarn is needed, along with a stitch marker to track round progression. Fiberfill or similar stuffing material is required to fill the completed mole toy, though the exact quantity is not specified in the provided excerpt.
