Product Description
This beanie was inspired in part by the colours and patterning of this beautiful mosaic made from upcycled materials by an artist in Perthshire where I used to live. It is knitted entirely in the round using the fairisle/stranded colourwork technique with decreases at the crown being done using centred double decreases (CDD). A hyperlink is included in the pattern if you are unfamiliar with this method.
The beanie takes around 25-30g of each of the three shades so it is ideal for using up leftovers plus you can get at least three beanies from just three balls if using the suggested wool. Ideal for last minute gifting as it is also superfast to knit on 6.5mm needles!
Mosaic Beanie by Olach Designs
Project Overview
The Mosaic Beanie is a beginner-friendly knitted hat designed by Olach Designs, inspired by the vibrant colours and patterning of upcycled mosaic artwork from Perthshire. This downloadable PDF pattern offers a quick and rewarding knitting project that showcases colourwork techniques while making efficient use of yarn scraps.
What Is Being Made
A knitted beanie hat worked entirely in the round, featuring a three-colour fairisle stranded colourwork design. The hat is constructed using decreases at the crown to create a fitted, finished shape. This design is particularly practical for gift-giving due to its quick knitting time and the ability to create multiple beanies from minimal yarn quantities.
Knitting Techniques Used
- Fairisle/Stranded Colourwork: The primary technique throughout the beanie, allowing two colours to be worked simultaneously across each round to create the mosaic-inspired pattern
- Centred Double Decreases (CDD): Used at the crown to shape the top of the beanie with a professional finish; the pattern includes a hyperlink for reference if this method is unfamiliar to the knitter
- Knitting in the Round: The entire beanie is constructed circularly using either double-pointed needles or the preferred method for seamless, tubular construction
Stitches and Construction
The beanie employs fundamental knitting stitches combined with colourwork techniques. The fairisle method involves carrying unused yarn strands inside the fabric while knitting with the active colour, creating a dense, insulating fabric. Crown shaping uses centred double decreases to taper the top smoothly, resulting in a polished finish without visible seams.
Materials Required
- Yarn: Jamieson's of Shetland Chunky Marl (120m/100g) in three shades: Cedar 1060 (Shade A), Husk 383 (Shade B), and Purple (Shade C). Approximately 25–30g of each colour is needed per beanie, making this pattern ideal for using leftover yarn. Three complete beanies can be knitted from just three balls of the suggested yarn
- Needles: 5.5mm double-pointed needles (or preferred circular method) for ribbing or initial rounds, and 6.5mm double-pointed needles (or preferred method for working in the round) for the main body
- Additional Supplies: Tapestry needle for weaving in ends after completion
Yarn Weight and Knitting Speed
This pattern uses chunky-weight yarn, which contributes to the beanie's quick knitting time of approximately 25–30 minutes. The substantial yarn weight on 6.5mm needles creates a fast, satisfying project ideal for beginners seeking rapid results and last-minute gift solutions.
Difficulty Level
Rated as a beginner project, the Mosaic Beanie is accessible to knitters new to colourwork. While fairisle stranded colourwork is introduced, the pattern's straightforward construction and the inclusion of helpful references make it an excellent stepping stone for developing this valuable technique.
