Morydau Sweater by Fyberspates
What is Being Made
The Morydau is a simple yet thoughtfully detailed knitted sweater designed by Jeni Hewlett for Fyberspates. Named after the Welsh word for estuary, reflecting the designer's location near the Dee Estuary in Wales, this sweater is styled as a casual piece perfect for outdoor wear such as a walk on the beach. The design is available in an extensive range of sizes, from 2XS through 12X, making it accessible to a wide variety of body types and fit preferences.
Sizing and Fit
The Morydau sweater is designed to be worn with 8 to 9 centimeters of positive ease, depending on where you fall within the size range. The bust/chest measurements range from 81cm in the smallest size up through larger proportions, with armhole depths varying from 20cm in the smallest sizes to 30cm in the largest sizes. This generous ease allowance ensures a comfortable, relaxed fit suitable for layering and everyday wear.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
This intermediate-level knitting project employs fundamental sweater construction techniques. The pattern utilizes circular needle knitting, which allows for seamless construction and the ability to work in the round. The sweater features ribbed details at the armholes, a classic finishing technique that provides elasticity and structure to the garment. The construction method and stitch work are designed to be accessible to knitters with intermediate experience, making this an ideal project for those progressing beyond basic garment patterns.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Morydau is knitted using Fyberspates Scrumptious 4ply yarn, a heavy 4ply weight yarn composed of 45% silk and 55% Merino wool. This fiber blend creates a garment with natural breathability, moisture-wicking properties, and a subtle sheen characteristic of silk. The yarn provides 365 meters per 100-gram skein. The colorway used in the pattern is Glisten (318). Yardage requirements range from 4 skeins for the smallest sizes up to 8 skeins for the largest sizes, with most sizes requiring between 4 and 7 skeins of yarn.
Needles and Tools Required
The pattern calls for 2.75mm [UK 12/US 2] circular needles measuring 80 centimeters in length. These needles are appropriately sized for working with heavy 4ply weight yarn and allow for the seamless, in-the-round construction method used throughout the sweater.
