Product Description

The Mo'Rockin' Sunrise Ponchette was inspired by the joy of watching the sun rise in the east as it slowly climbs higher in the sky.

By choosing a light weight yarn to create two different pieces, this short poncho (ponchette) offers two distinct looks to be paired with your favorite warm weather outfits.

Through the use of extended and tall stitches a unique shape is created that drapes wonderfuully across the shoulders. Show off both sides by wearing it like a cape with an option to keep it secure with a brooch (instructions included), or show off just one side by lacing the two pieces together to be worn as a short poncho.

If you prefer to create a breezy or warmer poncho, you can make two pieces of each side.

What Is Being Made

The Mo'Rockin' Sunrise Ponchette is a crocheted half-circle cape-style garment designed as an intermediate-level project. This ponchette measures approximately 34 inches across the bottom and 17 inches from center top to bottom, making it a versatile layering piece that drapes elegantly over the shoulders. The half-circle construction creates a flattering silhouette suitable for various occasions and body types.

Craft and Primary Technique

This project is worked entirely in crochet, utilizing a US Size H (5.00 mm) hook. The pattern employs a chainless starting double crochet (CSDC) technique, which creates a professional foundation without the typical chain base. This advanced starting method is characteristic of intermediate-level crochet design and eliminates the need for a separate foundation chain, resulting in a cleaner, more polished edge.

Stitches and Techniques Used

The Mo'Rockin' Sunrise Ponchette incorporates a variety of crochet stitches to create texture and structure:

  • Double crochet (dc) – a fundamental stitch that forms the primary fabric
  • Extended double crochet (edc) – a taller variation that adds height and drape to specific sections
  • Extended single crochet (esc) – used for shaping and detail work
  • Double treble crochet (dtr) – a tall stitch that may be incorporated for decorative or structural elements
  • Back loop (BL) crochet – working through only the back loop of stitches to create textured ridges and dimensional effects
  • Chain stitches (ch) – used for spacing and construction throughout the pattern

The pattern also calls for stitch markers to track pattern repeats and shaping increases, essential for maintaining accuracy across the half-circle construction.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

This project requires Paintbox Yarns Metallic DK, a weight #3 (DK/light worsted) yarn composed of 55% cotton and 45% polyamide. The metallic content adds subtle shimmer and visual interest, particularly appropriate for a design named "Sunrise." The yarn specifications are 131 yards per 120 meters per 1.7 ounce (50 gram) skein. The pattern requires 5 skeins, totaling approximately 587 yards and 224 grams of yarn.

Gauge and Finishing Details

The gauge for the half-circle sections is 5 rows equals 2.25 inches (6 centimeters), which should be checked before beginning to ensure proper finished dimensions. The ponchette is finished with three 15mm buttons, likely used as a closure mechanism at the neckline or as decorative embellishments. Additional tools needed include scissors, a yarn needle for weaving in ends, and a measuring tape for checking dimensions throughout construction.

Difficulty Level

Rated as intermediate, this pattern is suitable for crocheters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle more complex construction methods. The chainless starting double crochet technique and the half-circle shaping require understanding of stitch manipulation and pattern reading, making it an ideal project for advancing beyond beginner-level work.
