Moraine DK Cardigan by Dieuwke Schack-Mulligen
What is Being Made
Moraine is a v-neck cardigan featuring a distinctive ridge pattern detail along the left side of the body, shoulder, and sleeve. The design takes its name from geological formations—moraines are ridges, mounds, or irregular masses of glacial drift composed of boulders, gravel, sand, and clay. This cardigan combines elegant simplicity with textural interest, making it suitable for knitters new to garment construction.
Knitting Techniques
This cardigan employs several key knitting techniques to achieve its finished structure. The shoulder and sleeve shaping utilizes the contiguous method, a modern technique developed by Susie Myers that allows for seamless integration of different garment sections. The pattern includes stockinette stitch as the primary fabric base, which provides a smooth, classic canvas for the ridge pattern detail. Stitch counts throughout the pattern are provided in convenient table format for easy reference and accurate sizing.
Row gauge is emphasized as particularly important in this design, as it directly affects the size and placement of the armholes. Knitters with a tighter row gauge than specified (meaning more rows per 4 inches / 10 cm) can adjust by working a couple of extra rows before dividing for the sleeves.
Stitches Used
- Stockinette stitch for the main fabric
- Ridge pattern detail on left body, shoulder, and sleeve sections
Materials Required
Yarn: Squoosh Fiberarts Ultra DK (100% Merino wool; 206 meters / 225 yards per 100g). This DK weight yarn provides excellent stitch definition and drape suitable for cardigan construction.
Needles: US 7 / 4.5 mm circular needles, 32 inches / 80 cm length.
Notions and Tools:
- 6 stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and shaping
- Darning needle for weaving in ends
- Waste yarn for setting stitches aside during sleeve construction
- 7-8 buttons, 0.75 inch / 2 cm size for the front closure
Gauge and Sizing
The pattern is worked to a gauge of 19 stitches and 25 rows over 4 inches / 10 cm in stockinette stitch. Multiple sizes are available, with detailed measurements provided in a sizing table included in the pattern. Accurate gauge is essential for proper fit, particularly row gauge, which ensures the armhole depth and placement align correctly with the designer's specifications.
Skill Level
Moraine is rated as a beginner level knitting project, making it an excellent choice for knitters new to cardigan construction. The straightforward stitch patterns and well-organized instructions provide a solid foundation for learning garment shaping techniques while creating a wearable, stylish piece.
