Product Description

Moos-imo and his son Junior are an adorable set of Alberta moose - an addition to the collection of moose stuffies that my friend owns. A few years ago she asked me to make a knit moose for her collection and ever since it has been a "Christmas gift to herself" as she waits to see what I will create for her growing group of moose ornaments. Moos-imo is worked in Astra yarn and Junior in the lighter Baby Smiles by Schachenmayr. The design includes photos to make the ski set and sled and photos to make the antlers. An easy knit design done in moss stitch and st. st. with pfb and kfb increases and short rows on the elnows and knees. Quick and easy using about one skein of Astra and 100m of baby yarn.

Moos-imo and Junior Knitted Toy Pattern

What is Being Made

This downloadable knitting pattern creates two adorable stuffed moose toys designed by Wendy Siladji of Tat'sgran's Treasures. The pattern includes instructions for making Moos-imo, a larger sitting moose measuring 7 inches when finished, and Junior, a smaller companion moose standing 4 inches tall. These are beginner-friendly knitted toys perfect for gift-giving or personal collection.

Knitting Techniques and Construction

The toys are constructed using fundamental knitting techniques suitable for beginners. The pattern employs double-pointed needles (DPN) measuring a minimum of 10 inches long for assembly and shaping of the three-dimensional moose forms. The toys are created through a combination of knitted pieces that are then assembled together using a tapestry needle. Polyester fiberfil is used as the stuffing material to give the toys their plump, cuddly shape, while safety eyes bring personality to each moose character.

Stitches and Yarn Specifications

The pattern utilizes sport weight yarn, which is ideal for creating detailed, smaller-scale projects like these toys. Moos-imo is worked in Patons Astra yarn with a gauge of 22 stitches by 28 rows over 4 inches. Junior uses Schachenmayr Baby Smiles yarn with a slightly tighter gauge of 28 stitches by 36 rows over 4 inches, creating a more compact finished toy.

Materials and Yarn Requirements

  • For Moos-imo: One 50-gram ball (147 meters) of Patons Astra in Medium Tan, plus 40 meters of dark tan, 1 meter of deep pink, and 8 meters of cardinal red for details
  • For Junior: Schachenmayr Baby Smiles yarn including 60 meters of #1010 light tan, 8 meters of #1011 dark tan, and 4 meters each of red and white for a decorative scarf
  • Needles: 3.5mm knitting needles, minimum 10 inches long double-pointed needles for assembly
  • Notions: Tapestry needle for seaming, one set of 12mm safety eyes for Moos-imo, one set of 9mm safety eyes for Junior, and 2 snowflake buttons measuring 5/8 inch diameter for embellishment

Skill Level

This pattern is rated as beginner difficulty, making it an excellent introduction to toy knitting and three-dimensional construction techniques. The straightforward stitch work and clear assembly instructions allow newer knitters to successfully create charming, finished toys.
