Materials: For this crochet marmot you’ll need worsted weight yarn and an E US/3.5 mm crochet hook. You’ll need four or three colours of yarn, murky brown, 2/4 of a 100 yard skein (body), barley, 1/20 (belly) and left-over bits of light beige for the muzzle and eyebrows, acorn heather for the paws and ears. For the eyes use 8 mm animal eyes. You will also need fibrefill and pellets for a bit of extra weight in the body (I use Hama beads). Lopi colour numbers: 1420, 1419, 0086, and 0053.
Monty 2 the Marmot Crochet Pattern
What Is Being Made
Monty 2 is a crochet marmot amigurumi toy, also known as a woodchuck or groundhog. This beginner-friendly crochet pattern creates a small stuffed animal toy designed by Sonja van der Wijk (Son's Popkes). When made with the recommended yarn, the finished marmot measures approximately 5.5 inches or 14 centimeters in height, making it an ideal size for a decorative toy or gift.
Crochet Techniques Used
The Monty 2 marmot is constructed using fundamental amigurumi techniques suitable for crocheters of all skill levels. The doll is worked in the round using continuous spiral rounds, a common method for creating seamless, three-dimensional stuffed toys. The pattern employs color changes throughout the construction, with detailed instructions provided in color-coded format to simplify the more complex color transitions. Standard American crochet terminology is used throughout the pattern, making it accessible to English-speaking crocheters.
Stitches and Construction Methods
While specific stitch names are referenced using American crochet terms, the pattern utilizes basic crochet stitches commonly found in amigurumi projects. The use of a stitch marker is recommended to track the beginning of each round as you work in continuous spirals, helping maintain consistency and clarity throughout the construction process. Color changes are executed by changing yarn in the last loop of each stitch, a standard technique that ensures clean transitions between different colored sections of the marmot.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
Yarn Weight: Worsted weight yarn is used for this project. The designer strongly recommends using a fuzzy yarn to achieve the characteristic texture of a marmot. The specific yarn used in the original pattern is Istex Lètt lopi, a 100% wool yarn that provides the ideal fuzzy texture and appearance for this woodland creature toy.
Important Material Notes: The finished size of your marmot will depend on both the yarn weight you select and your personal crochet tension. Tighter crochet work will result in a smaller finished toy, while looser tension will produce a larger marmot. Due to these variables, the designer recommends experimenting with eye size despite the pattern recommendations provided, ensuring your finished toy has the proportions you desire.
A crochet hook appropriate for worsted weight yarn and fiberfill stuffing material are necessary to complete this project, though specific hook sizes and stuffing quantities are detailed within the full pattern instructions.
