Product Description
Dramatic, yet easy to knit, this set of accessories would look good anywhere! Easy to customize with fun buttons (I used some great antique buttons), and buttonholes are made using the one-row buttonhole technique. This pattern is one that I've decided to call "Patterns for Hope" and proceeds from the sale of this pattern will go to Heifer International and Habitat for Humanity. A full explanation is in the pattern.
Montrose Accessories by Therese Chynoweth
Overview
Montrose Accessories is a downloadable knitting pattern collection designed by independent designer Therese Chynoweth. This intermediate-level project includes three coordinating pieces: a fitted hat, wristers (fingerless mittens), and an infinity scarf. All three designs are worked in chunky weight yarn, making them quick to complete while creating substantial, cozy accessories perfect for cold weather.
What Is Being Made
- Hat: A fitted hat available in three sizes (Small, Medium, Large) with finished circumferences of 20, 21, or 22 inches and heights of 8¼, 8¾, or 9¼ inches respectively
- Wristers: Fingerless mittens or wrist warmers in matching sizes (Small, Medium, Large) with circumferences of 7, 7½, or 8 inches and a length of 5¾ inches
- Infinity Scarf: A one-size circular scarf with a finished circumference of 40 inches and width of 7 inches
Knitting Techniques
The Montrose Accessories patterns employ fundamental knitting techniques suitable for intermediate-level crafters. The designs utilize both straight needles and circular needles, allowing knitters to choose their preferred method. The patterns include shaping techniques for the fitted hat and wristers, demonstrating how to create garments that conform to the body. Stitch markers and stitch holders are used throughout to track pattern repeats and manage stitches during construction.
Stitches and Stitch Work
While specific stitch patterns are not detailed in the provided content, the intermediate skill level indicates the use of standard knitting stitches beyond basic garter and stockinette. The patterns require understanding of increases and decreases for shaping the hat crown and wrist openings, as well as techniques for joining rounds when working on circular needles.
Yarn and Materials
All three Montrose Accessories designs are worked in chunky weight yarn (also classified as Bulky #5), which creates quick, satisfying projects. The hat requires approximately 140 to 155 yards depending on size, the wristers need 116 to 132 yards, and the infinity scarf uses 254 yards. The pattern is shown worked in Briar Rose Fibers Sonoma, a 100% Peruvian wool yarn available in 8 ounce hanks containing 460 yards, providing ample yardage for completing all three pieces in a single colorway.
Needles and Notions
The pattern calls for US 10 (6 mm) needles in multiple configurations: straight needles, a 16-inch circular needle, and double-pointed needles. This flexibility allows knitters to use their preferred techniques for flat or circular knitting. Essential notions include stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats, stitch holders or scrap yarn for managing live stitches, and a tapestry needle for finishing.
Skill Level and Project Scope
Designed for intermediate knitters, the Montrose Accessories collection assumes familiarity with basic knitting fundamentals while introducing or reinforcing shaping techniques and working with multiple needle types. The chunky yarn weight means projects work up quickly despite their finished size, making this an excellent collection for knitters seeking satisfying, wearable results without an extensive time commitment.
