Product Description
You’re going to love this baby blanket! The original “inspiration” blanket was my mom’s favorite baby blanket. She kept that pattern for decades and made it whenever there was a new baby in the family!
My mom's favorite blanket was worked in 7 strips with 19 curved motifs in each strip. The strips had to be sewn together before the edging was added. This made for lots of additional work. Plus there were so many ends to weave in!!!
This redesigned blanket is worked in rows instead of strips, with 1/7 as many ends to weave in and NO seaming! I hope you like it as much as I do!
There are over 90 step-by-step photos in this pattern to help YOU be successful in crocheting it!
The pattern is written for right-handed and left-handed crocheters. It includes symbol crochet charts for both hands, as well.
The pattern will work just fine if you’d like to use worsted weight yarn to make an afghan size instead of a baby blanket.
Mom's Favorite Baby Blanket by Susan Lowman
Project Overview
Mom's Favorite Baby Blanket is a sentimental crochet design by Susan Lowman that reimagines a cherished family heirloom. The original blanket was a treasured pattern kept and remade by the designer's mother for decades whenever a new baby arrived in the family. After the designer's mother passed away while working on a blanket for her first grandchild in early 2016, Susan Lowman completed the partially finished blanket and subsequently redesigned the pattern to improve the construction process. This baby blanket combines meaningful family history with practical, modern crochet techniques.
What Is Being Made
This project creates a finished baby blanket measuring approximately 34 inches wide by 48 inches high. The blanket is designed as a complete, ready-to-use throw suitable for infants and young children. Unlike the original strip-based construction method, this redesigned version uses a row-by-row approach that significantly reduces finishing work.
Construction Technique
The redesigned Mom's Favorite Baby Blanket employs a row-based construction method rather than the original strip assembly approach. This modern technique offers substantial practical advantages for crocheters. By working in continuous rows instead of separate strips that require seaming, this pattern dramatically reduces the number of yarn ends that need to be woven in and eliminates the seaming step entirely. This streamlined approach makes the project more efficient while maintaining the aesthetic appeal of the original design.
Crochet Stitches and Techniques
While specific stitch names are not detailed in the provided pattern excerpt, the design is classified as intermediate to advanced in skill level, indicating that it incorporates more complex stitch work beyond basic single crochet and double crochet. The pattern likely features decorative stitch combinations or textured elements appropriate for an heirloom-quality baby blanket.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
- Yarn Weight: DK weight or sport weight yarn
- Yarn Type: Light worsted weight options are suitable for this project
- Tools Required: Crochet hook (size to be specified in full pattern based on yarn weight selection)
The use of DK and sport weight yarns creates a fabric with excellent drape and softness, making these yarn choices ideal for baby blankets. These lighter weights produce a blanket that is breathable and comfortable for infants while maintaining structural integrity.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate to advanced, making it suitable for crocheters with solid foundational skills who are ready to tackle more sophisticated stitch patterns and construction methods. The advanced difficulty reflects both the complexity of the stitchwork and the precision required in row-based construction.
Format and Availability
Mom's Favorite Baby Blanket is available as a downloadable PDF pattern, allowing crafters to access the complete instructions immediately upon purchase. This digital format enables easy printing, storage, and reference while working on the project.
