Product Description

This scarf is as light as air! It is ideal for all year round wear, but especially for the chilly spring and fall days. It is decorated with pretty little flowers knitted with the same lightweight type of yarn.

The pattern will be ideal for an intermediate level knitter or someone who has tried knitting with fine yarns before.

I started learning lace knitting using this kind of yarn. That was very ambitious of me, but I managed with a lot of patience and practice. I hope you enjoy knitting with this beautiful yarn too!

Mohair Flowers Scarf by BelaFarCrafts

What is Being Made

The Mohair Flowers Scarf is a luxurious knitted scarf featuring delicate mohair construction paired with decorative knitted flowers. This downloadable PDF pattern from independent designer BelaFarCrafts creates a finished scarf measuring approximately 16cm x 87cm (6.5 inches x 34 inches), with accompanying flowers ranging from 2cm to 4.5cm (1 to 2 inches) in size. The scarf combines elegant simplicity with decorative embellishment, making it an intermediate-level knitting project suitable for crafters with some knitting experience.

Techniques and Stitches Used

The primary construction technique for this scarf is Garter Stitch, which involves knitting all stitches on every row. This fundamental knitting stitch creates a textured, reversible fabric with horizontal ridges that is ideal for showcasing the luxurious qualities of mohair yarn. Garter Stitch is a versatile technique that works beautifully with delicate lace-weight yarns, as it allows the yarn's sheen and softness to become a focal point of the finished piece.

The pattern includes instructions for creating separate knitted flowers that serve as decorative elements. These flowers are constructed using the same yarn and needles as the main scarf body, allowing for cohesive design integration. The flower construction adds a dimensional, embellished quality to the finished accessory.

Materials: Yarn and Needles

Yarn Specifications: The Mohair Flowers Scarf uses Rowan Kidsilk Haze, a premium lace-weight yarn composed of 70% Mohair and 30% Silk. The main scarf is worked in shade #629, while the decorative flowers utilize shade #583. One ball of yarn provides 25 grams and 210 meters (229 yards) of yardage, offering ample material for completing both the scarf and flowers.

Needle Requirements: The pattern recommends 3.25mm (US 3) to 5mm (US 8) needles, with the designer using single-pointed 4.00mm (US 6) needles for both the scarf and flower construction. The pattern notes that alternative needle sizes may be used according to individual preference. Bamboo or wood needles are suggested as particularly suitable for working with mohair yarn, as their slightly textured surface provides better grip and control compared to metal needles, which can cause stitches to slip more easily on delicate fibers.

Gauge and Tension

The recommended tension for this project is 18–25 stitches and 23–34 rows per 10cm x 10cm (4-inch x 4-inch) square. The pattern emphasizes the importance of knitting tension swatches before beginning the main project, as this allows crafters to test how the yarn behaves with their chosen needles and to observe how the finished knitting will appear. This step is particularly valuable when working with delicate lace-weight mohair, which can vary significantly in appearance based on needle size and individual tension.

Pattern Construction

The scarf is constructed by casting on 35 stitches and working continuously in Garter Stitch until the piece reaches approximately 87cm (34 inches) in length. Once the desired length is achieved, stitches are cast off knit-wise to create a finished edge. The straightforward construction makes this an accessible intermediate project, with the primary challenge being the management of delicate lace-weight yarn rather than complex stitch patterns.

Yarn Care Considerations

The pattern includes an important reminder to ensure that all yarn used in the project comes from the same dye lot. This is essential when working with hand-dyed or specialty yarns like Rowan Kidsilk Haze, as different dye lots can produce subtle color variations that would be visible in the finished scarf and flowers.
