Product Description
You must do something to make the world more beautiful” ~Miss Rumphius by Barbara Cooney
This lovely yarn found its way into my life during a dark season. Nothing was going right, the days were long, the sun was hiding and joy was not to be found. Somewhere in the midst of those days, my children picked up Miss Rumphius off the shelf for Circle Time, and as we snuggled in to read this delightful picture book, the words started to soften my heart. It wasn’t up to them to make my life more beautiful, but rather, I needed to find a way to make the world more beautiful. As it would happen, this skein of yarn that I ordered in an attempt to brighten my mood (retail therapy anyone?) arrived at just the right time, and what should be attached to the twine string on the brown paper packaging, but the most adorable little pack of lupine seeds.
Miss Rumphius Knit Shawl by Jessica Anderson
What Is Being Made
The Miss Rumphius shawl is a beginner-friendly knit design inspired by Barbara Cooney's beloved children's book Miss Rumphius. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a lovely shawl that celebrates the story's central message: "You must do something to make the world more beautiful." The design is named after the book's protagonist and serves as a creative tribute to the themes of beauty, purpose, and positive impact found throughout the narrative.
Yarn and Materials
This shawl pattern is worked in 4-ply yarn weight, which provides a lightweight, versatile fabric suitable for layering and draping. The designer's personal inspiration came from a specific skein of yarn that arrived during a meaningful time, accompanied by lupine seeds—a nod to the lupine flowers central to Miss Rumphius's story. Knitters will need appropriate needles sized for 4-ply yarn, as specified in the downloadable PDF pattern.
Techniques and Stitches
Designed as a beginner-level project, the Miss Rumphius shawl employs fundamental knitting techniques that make it accessible to newer knitters while still creating a beautiful finished garment. The pattern utilizes classic knitting stitches appropriate for shawl construction, allowing knitters to build confidence with essential skills while producing an elegant, wearable piece.

This design is available as a downloadable PDF, making it easy to access and print for reference while working on your project.
