Product Description
These mittens will fit an 18" doll, such as an American Doll. They are primarily designed for use as Christmas ornaments.
The pattern calls for 25 yds., total, but I work this pattern in about 15 yards, including the 4-inch braid to connect the mittens.
Mini Mittens Ornament by Keya Kuhn
What is Being Made
Mini Mittens Ornament is a decorative knitting project designed to create a pair of tiny mitten ornaments. These miniature mittens are ideal for holiday decorations, gift embellishments, or small festive accents. The project produces two complete mittens worked simultaneously using an efficient knitting technique.
Craft and Primary Technique
This is a knitting project classified as beginner-level, making it accessible to knitters new to the craft. The pattern employs the magic loop method, an advanced yet efficient technique that allows knitters to work two mittens at the same time on a single circular needle. This method reduces the number of needles required and streamlines the construction process, making it practical despite the small scale of the finished ornaments.
Stitches and Construction Methods
The Mini Mittens pattern utilizes several key knitting techniques and stitches:
- Ribbed cuff: Created using a k1, p1 (knit one, purl one) alternating pattern worked in the round for multiple rounds to form an elastic, fitted opening
- Stockinette stitch: Smooth knit rounds form the body of each mitten
- Increases: The kftb (knit front and back) technique creates increases for shaping the thumb gusset, which adds volume and proper fit to the mitten
- Kitchener stitch: A grafting method used to seamlessly close the remaining stitches at the mitten tops and thumbs, creating an invisible finish without binding off
- Waste yarn technique: Temporary yarn holds stitches for the thumb, which are later picked up and worked to completion
Materials and Gauge
Yarn: Fingering or sport weight yarn in 3-ply or 4-ply construction. Approximately 25 yards total is required to complete both ornaments, making this an excellent project for using yarn scraps or small quantities.
Needles: US #2 (2.5mm) circular needles with a 24-inch cable length are recommended to accommodate the magic loop method for working two mittens simultaneously.
Additional notions: A tapestry needle for weaving in ends and waste yarn for holding thumb stitches during construction.
Gauge: 8.5 stitches by 12 rows equals 1 inch in stockinette stitch, which is essential for achieving the proper miniature scale of the finished ornaments.
Pattern Structure
The pattern is organized to work both mittens concurrently using the magic loop method on a single circular needle. Construction begins with casting on stitches for both mittens, followed by ribbed cuff rounds. The mitten body is then worked in stockinette stitch before shaping the thumb gusset with strategic increases. Thumb stitches are held on waste yarn and worked later, while the main mitten is completed and grafted closed. The same process is repeated for the thumb section, resulting in finished ornaments with no visible seams.
