Easter Bunny Mini Knitting Pattern
What Is Being Made
This is a pocket-sized knitted toy bunny designed as a beginner-friendly knitting project. The finished bunny measures 13cm x 8cm, making it an ideal small decorative toy or gift. The pattern creates a simple stuffed bunny with distinct ears and a cute face detail.
Project Overview
The Mini Bunny Toy is constructed using basic knitting techniques suitable for beginners. Two identical pieces are knitted separately to form the front and back of the bunny, which are then assembled together with toy stuffing to create a three-dimensional plush toy.
Knitting Techniques Used
- Casting On: The pattern begins by casting on 20 stitches to establish the foundation row
- Stocking Stitch: The primary stitch used throughout the body and ears, creating a smooth, classic knitted fabric
- Shaping with Short Rows: Ears are formed by working only on a subset of stitches (10 stitches at a time), turning the work to create separate ear sections
- Casting Off: Used to finish and secure stitches at the completion of each ear section
- Yarn Rejoining: After completing the first ear, yarn is rejoined to work the second ear on the remaining stitches
Stitches Used
- Knit Stitch: Used for the foundation and throughout stocking stitch rows
- Purl Stitch: Used to alternate with knit stitches to create stocking stitch texture
Materials Required
Yarn: DK weight yarn in any color. The pattern example shows bunnies knitted in Sirdar Bonus DK in pink and blue, as well as Sirdar Crofter self-striping DK yarn for added visual interest.
Needles: 3mm knitting needles are required to work with DK weight yarn at the appropriate gauge.
Additional Materials: Toy stuffing for filling the bunny body, a small circular button or pompom for the tail, a metre of black DK yarn for creating facial features, a darning needle for weaving in yarn ends, a sewing needle for assembly, and white cotton for additional detail work.
Pattern Construction Details
Each bunny piece begins with casting on 20 stitches and working 30 rows in stocking stitch to form the body. The ears are then created through a clever shaping technique: the knitter works only on the first 10 stitches to create one ear in stocking stitch for 15 rows, then casts off. The yarn is then rejoined to the remaining 10 stitches to create the second ear, worked in stocking stitch for 16 rows before casting off. This method creates two ears of slightly different lengths for natural variation.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is classified as beginner difficulty, making it an excellent introduction to toy knitting. The techniques required—casting on, basic stitches, and simple shaping—are fundamental skills that new knitters can master with this project.
