In a park near my house is a 2nd Century shrine to the Roman goddess of wisdom, Minerva. She’s badly weathered and the outlines of her body are barely visible, but her impression is still there. Inspired by the remaining relief in stone, the Celtic cables of Britain’s pre-Roman inhabitants, and the columns of the Greeks, comes the Minerva hat, an intricately cabled winter hat that will keep you toasty on the chilliest of modern days.

What is Being Made
The Minerva is an intricately cabled winter hat designed by Ashley Knowlton, inspired by Roman goddess iconography, Celtic cable traditions, and classical Greek architectural elements. This intermediate-level knitting project creates a finished hat with a 21.5-inch head circumference and 8.5-inch depth, suitable for most women. The hat combines historical design influences with modern functionality, offering warmth and sophisticated visual interest through its detailed cable work.
Knitting Techniques Used
This project employs cable knitting as its primary technique, featuring intricate cable patterns that form the visual centerpiece of the design. The hat is constructed using the Magic Loop method or traditional double-pointed needle (DPN) technique, both of which allow for seamless circular knitting in the round. The cable work requires careful stitch manipulation and pattern following, making this an intermediate-difficulty project that demands attention to cable crossing sequences and pattern repeats.
Stitches Used
The Minerva hat features cable stitches as defined in the included stitch chart. The pattern utilizes specialized cable techniques that involve crossing groups of stitches over one another to create the dimensional, twisted rope-like texture characteristic of Celtic-inspired cable work. Knitters will work from a provided chart pattern that guides the cable crossings and supporting stitches throughout the hat's construction.
Materials and Needles
This project requires approximately 140 yards of Aran-weight yarn. The pattern is shown worked in Shokay Shambala Yak, a luxury yarn composed of 100% yak down with 164 yards per 100-gram skein. Knitters will need a set of five US 8 (5.00mm) double-pointed needles or a US 8 (5.00mm) circular needle measuring at least 40 inches long for the Magic Loop method. Additional tools include a cable needle for manipulating cable stitches and a tapestry needle for finishing. The recommended gauge is 24 stitches and 28 rows over 4 inches in the cable pattern.
