What is Being Made

MINDCRAFT is a beginner-friendly knitted hat designed to fit head circumferences of 54–56 cm (21–22 inches). The finished hat measures approximately 23 cm (9.25 inches) from the folded brim to the crown, making it a classic close-fitting style suitable for a range of wearers. This downloadable PDF pattern is free and ideal for knitters new to colorwork techniques.

Techniques Used

This pattern introduces knitters to fundamental hat construction and colorwork methods. The German Twisted Cast-On creates a secure, elastic foundation edge that works particularly well for ribbed brims. The pattern incorporates color dominance in fair-isle knitting, a technique that manages how two colors interact within the same stitch to create balanced, visually appealing colorwork. Working in the round on circular needles and double-pointed needles ensures seamless construction from brim to crown.

Stitches Used

• 1x1 Rib (in the Rnd) — alternating knit and purl stitches worked in the round (*k1, p1*, repeated around) to create the elastic, textured brim
• Fair-Isle Colorwork — stranded knitting using two colors per row to build patterned sections above the ribbed cuff

Materials

The pattern calls for 2 skeins of Comfy DK by Martin's Lab, a 100% superwash merino yarn with 225 meters (246 yards) per 100 grams. The hat is worked in two colors: Silver Lining and Bubble Gum as the main and contrasting colors respectively. Needles required include a 4.00 mm (US #6) circular needle at least 40 cm (16 inches) long and matching double-pointed needles for the initial cast-on, plus a 3.5 mm (US #4) circular needle of the same length and corresponding dpns for the main body of the hat. DK-weight yarn paired with these needle sizes creates a fabric with excellent drape and stitch definition ideal for colorwork.
