Product Description
Rosa Rugosa is also called a beach rose or beach tomato and grows in the sand at the beach of Cape Cod, Massachusetts where I spent my summers growing up. Inspired by the memories of big buckets of ‘perfume’ with beach roses and salt water from the ocean, I designed this garter stitch crescent shaped shawlette with a flower and wave lace pattern along with short rows to give it a crescent shape. This year I took my family back to visit my mom, Mimi, for our summer vacation and decided to desin and knit this to remind me of the beach in the cold of winter. What better way to take my vacation home with me?

Mimi's Rosa Rugosa Crescent Shawlette by Kimberly Gintar
Project Overview
Mimi's Rosa Rugosa is a crescent-shaped shawlette designed by Kimberly Gintar and inspired by beach roses that grow along the Cape Cod, Massachusetts coastline. This intermediate-level knitting project combines garter stitch with decorative lace elements to create a versatile accessory that captures memories of seaside summers. The finished shawlette measures approximately 44 inches wide and 36 inches high in its crescent form, with dimensions of 9 inches in width and approximately 84 inches when stretched lengthwise.
What Is Being Made
This pattern creates a crescent shawlette—a smaller, shaped shawl that drapes elegantly across the shoulders. The crescent silhouette makes it an ideal accessory for layering during cooler months while maintaining the aesthetic appeal of a larger wrap. The design is inspired by the rosa rugosa flower, also known as beach rose or beach tomato, native to coastal sandy areas.
Knitting Techniques Used
- Garter stitch as the primary stitch structure, providing texture and stability
- Short rows to shape the crescent form and create the curved silhouette
- Lace knitting featuring flower and wave patterns integrated into the design
- Blocking and washing to achieve finished dimensions and enhance drape
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
The shawlette features garter stitch as its foundational texture, combined with lace motifs depicting flowers and waves. The lace pattern adds visual interest and lightness to the piece while the garter stitch provides structure. Short-row shaping is incorporated throughout to create the distinctive crescent shape.
Materials and Yarn Requirements
This project requires 575 yards (525.8 meters) of fingering weight yarn, which is a 4-ply yarn weight. The designer used Woll brand yarn for the original sample. Fingering weight yarn is ideal for lace and detailed stitch patterns, allowing the flower and wave motifs to display clearly while maintaining the shawlette's elegant drape.
Skill Level
Rated as advanced beginner to intermediate, this pattern is suitable for knitters who have mastered basic stitches and are ready to work with lace patterns and shaping techniques. The combination of garter stitch simplicity with lace complexity and short-row shaping makes it an excellent project for developing intermediate knitting skills.
