Product Description
Spring and summer is ahead - and to celebrate the first warming sun-rays I offer a sweet and simple top for free for you to enjoy! The Milou cross-over top is a lovely addition to a small girl's summer wardrobe. Used with trousers, a skirt, a pair of jeans it will be a true eyecatcher. Find your own favorite mixture of colors to enhance the small girl's own colors or clothing.
The top is as easy as fun to make. The knitting would suit an advanced beginner as well as a more experienced one. There are no difficult stiches involved. Maybe the most difficult part will be to choose colors for the stripe-pattern? The top is worked in the round, and bottom up to armpits from where work is divided for back and fronts. The right fronts stiches are picked up over the left front - easily done when you have a stripe-pattern to follow! Stiches are picked up along the armholes and the cross-over fronts to make the simple and lovely garter stich borders.

Milou Cross-Over Top by Anne B Hanssen
What is Being Made
Milou is a charming cross-over top designed for small children, available in sizes ranging from 9 months to 4 years. This feminine summer garment features a distinctive cross-over front design and is showcased in four coordinating shades of pink. The top combines practical construction with delicate detailing, making it an ideal addition to a young girl's warm-weather wardrobe.
Design Features and Construction
The Milou top begins with a white picot edging at the body, creating a refined finished edge. The cross-over fronts are bordered with neat white edgings that provide both visual definition and structural integrity. The armholes are similarly finished with white edgings, ensuring a polished appearance throughout the garment. This thoughtful use of contrasting edging creates visual interest while maintaining the feminine aesthetic of the design.
Knitting Techniques Used
The pattern employs several key knitting techniques to achieve its finished look. The picot edging at the body requires understanding of this decorative edge technique, which creates a delicate, scalloped finish. The cross-over construction demands careful shaping and attention to front panel placement. Edging work around the armholes and cross-over fronts requires precision to maintain neat, professional-looking borders throughout the garment.
Stitches Used
The primary stitch structure is stockinette stitch, which creates the smooth, classic fabric base for this top. This fundamental knit stitch provides an excellent canvas for displaying the color variations in the yarn and allows the picot and edging details to stand out prominently.
Materials and Specifications
The Milou top is designed to be worked with 3mm (US 2.5) circular needles in stockinette stitch. The recommended yarn is Schachenmayr's Catania, a mercerized cotton fiber that offers a wide range of color options for creating custom color combinations. The gauge is 26 stitches and 32 rows over 10x10cm (4x4 inches) in stockinette stitch, which is essential for achieving the correct finished measurements.
Size Range and Finished Measurements
- 9 months to 1 year: Bust 58cm/23", Full length 33cm/13"
