Product Description
There is something special about working with a rare breed yarn like Leicester Longwool. When I saw the laceweight that Ross Farm had in their booth, I could not resist it. The resulting fabric is even nicer that I expected and is surprisingly soft given how rustic it looks. But if you are not one to wear rustic wool on your wrists, I'm hard pressed to imagine any laceweight yarn that wouldn't work well with this pattern. The alpaca version is super soft and warm, without being heavy. The color changes and textured stitches keep the project interesting, but the stitch pattern is not complex
Novice crocheters should note that it can be tricky to see where to put your hook until you get into the groove of the project. The mitt cuff is worked flat and crocheted together to make a loop. The remainder of the mitt is worked in the round up from the circumference edge. In addition to common stitches, the pattern uses spike stitches.
Mill Run Mitts by Amy Maceyko
Project Overview
Mill Run Mitts are intermediate-level crochet mittens designed to showcase the beautiful qualities of laceweight yarns. This downloadable crochet pattern creates a pair of wrist-length mittens that combine rustic texture with surprising softness, making them suitable for various yarn fiber types and weights.
What Is Being Made
This pattern produces a pair of fitted mittens worked primarily in the round. The mittens feature a structured cuff and extend from the wrist upward, creating a classic mitten silhouette. The design is versatile enough to work with different yarn fibers, from rare breed Leicester Longwool laceweight to alpaca blends, allowing crafters to customize their finished mittens based on personal preference and available materials.
Crochet Techniques Used
The Mill Run Mitts pattern employs several intermediate crochet techniques that add visual interest without overwhelming the crafter:
- Flat crochet construction for the cuff, which is then crocheted together to form a continuous loop
- Circular crochet worked in the round from the wrist upward
- Spike stitches for textured detail
- Crochet through the back loop technique
- Crochet through the rear loop technique
- Color changes integrated throughout the stitch pattern
Stitches and Stitch Pattern Details
The pattern utilizes typical crochet stitches combined with specialty techniques to create visual texture and interest. While the stitch pattern is not complex, the combination of standard stitches with spike stitches and back/rear loop variations creates a sophisticated appearance. The pattern includes descriptions of all stitches and provides a photo tutorial for locating the rear loop, making it accessible for intermediate crocheters who may be less familiar with these techniques. The textured stitches and color changes maintain crafter engagement throughout the project without requiring advanced stitch knowledge.
Materials and Yarn Recommendations
Mill Run Mitts are designed for laceweight yarn, making them an excellent pattern for showcasing delicate yarn weights. The pattern was originally created using Leicester Longwool laceweight, a rare breed yarn known for its rustic appearance combined with surprising softness. Alternative yarn options include alpaca laceweight, which provides exceptional softness and warmth without adding bulk or weight to the finished mittens. The designer notes that virtually any laceweight yarn will work well with this pattern, offering crafters flexibility in fiber selection based on their preferences and stash.
Skill Level and Requirements
This pattern is rated at the intermediate difficulty level. Crafters should be comfortable with basic crochet stitches and familiar with working in the round before beginning this project. The required skills include understanding how to work flat sections and join them into loops, maintaining consistent tension while working circularly, and executing specialty techniques such as spike stitches and rear loop stitches. The pattern's inclusion of detailed stitch descriptions and photo tutorials supports crafters in mastering these techniques.
