What is Being Made

The Michelle Shredded Tank is a women's crocheted sleeveless top designed by Pam Dajczak and available in sizes XS through XL. This beginner-friendly garment features a fitted silhouette with a finished length of approximately 27 to 28 inches depending on size. The tank is constructed using a foundation of single crochet stitches worked in the round, creating a seamless cylindrical base that forms the body of the garment.

Craft and Techniques

This project is worked entirely in crochet, making it an accessible choice for beginners. The construction method involves working in continuous rounds from a foundation chain, which eliminates the need for seaming and creates a smooth, integrated fabric. The pattern uses a join-as-you-go technique, where the crocheter joins the foundation chain with a slip stitch to the first single crochet, being careful not to twist the work—a critical step for ensuring the garment lies flat and fits properly.

The shredded effect characteristic of this tank design is achieved through the strategic use of specialty stitches and pattern placement. Stitch markers are used throughout construction to identify key points and maintain pattern accuracy, particularly important when working in the round where the beginning of each round can be easy to lose track of.

Stitches Used

  • Chain stitch (ch): Used to create the foundation base of the garment
  • Single crochet (sc): The primary stitch forming the main fabric structure
  • Herringbone half double crochet (hhdc): A specialty stitch used to create textural elements and the shredded appearance of the tank
  • Slip stitch (slst): Used to join rounds and secure stitches

Materials and Tools

The Michelle Shredded Tank is worked in Light Worsted weight yarn (#4), which provides an ideal balance of drape and structure for a fitted tank top. The designer used We Are Knitters The Cotton Wool for the sample garment, though any light worsted weight yarn of similar fiber content and yardage will work. Yardage requirements vary by size: XS requires 875 yards, S requires 930 yards, M requires 985 yards, L requires 1035 yards, and XL requires 1100 yards.

A size I (5.5 mm) crochet hook is used throughout the project, paired with a tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends. A measuring tape and stitch marker are essential notions for tracking gauge, measuring finished dimensions, and marking the beginning of rounds during construction.

Gauge and Sizing

The pattern calls for a gauge of 16 single crochet stitches by 21 rows over 4 inches, worked with the specified yarn and hook size. Accurate gauge is essential for achieving the correct finished bust measurements across all sizes. The sizing chart provides bust measurements ranging from 28–30 inches for XS up to 44–46 inches for XL, with most sizes finishing at approximately 27 inches in length, allowing for a consistent, flattering proportion across the size range.

Difficulty Level

This pattern is rated as beginner level, making it an excellent choice for crocheters new to garment construction. While the pattern does introduce the specialty stitch of herringbone half double crochet, the overall structure remains straightforward with clear instructions and a manageable stitch count. The round-by-round construction method provides natural stopping points and makes it easy to track progress throughout the project.
