Product Description

As I was reading “My Grandmother Asked Me to Tell You She’s Sorry” by Fredrik Backman, I was inspired to create a pullover that embodied the spirit of Miamas, the fictional land of fairy tales where everyone is accepted for who they are. And so, Miamas the sweater was born.

Soft and feminine, this sweater features a diamond-shaped, three-dimensional circle yoke and a modest stockinette body. It’s worked from the top down, completely seamlessly, making it a joy to knit. I added buttoned cuff slits and an I-cord-finished neckline for a touch of elegance.

SUGGESTED YARNYarn A – Dye Dye Done Silky Merino (50% Merino, 50% Silk): 100g/ 437 yards {400 meters} held together with Yarn B – Dye Dye Done Silky Moha (72% Kid Mohair, 28% Silk): 50g/ 460 yards {420 meters}. Yardage requirements: 3 (3, 3, 3, 4, 4, 4, 4, 5) skeins of Yarn A and 2 (3, 3, 3, 3, 3, 4, 4, 4) skeins of Yarn B

Miamas Pullover Sweater by Hanna Maciejewska

What Is Being Made

Miamas is a seamless, top-down knit pullover sweater designed by Hanna Maciejewska. Inspired by the fictional land of Miamas from Fredrik Backman's "My Grandmother Asked Me to Tell You She's Sorry," this design embodies a spirit of acceptance and fairy-tale charm. The sweater is described as soft and feminine, featuring a distinctive three-dimensional diamond-shaped circle yoke paired with a modest stockinette stitch body. The garment is completed with button details for a refined finish.

Construction Method

This sweater is worked seamlessly from the top down using circular needles, eliminating the need for seaming and creating a continuous, uninterrupted knitting experience. The top-down construction method allows knitters to try on the garment as they progress and easily adjust the length to their preferences. The yoke is the focal point of the design, featuring dimensional shaping that transitions smoothly into the stockinette body.

Stitches and Techniques

  • Stockinette stitch forms the primary fabric of the sweater body, creating a smooth, classic knit appearance
  • Diamond-shaped patterning in the three-dimensional yoke adds visual interest and textural depth to the neckline and upper body
  • Circular knitting worked in the round on circular needles, eliminating side seams
  • Cable needle techniques are incorporated as part of the yoke construction
  • Stitch markers are used throughout to track pattern repeats and shaping increases

Materials and Tools

The Miamas pattern calls for DK weight yarn (also suitable for 4-ply and lace weight options depending on desired drape and finished fabric). Knitters will need US 6 (4 mm) circular needles in both 24-inch (60 cm) and 32-inch (80 cm) lengths, as well as US 7 (4.5 mm) circular needles in the same lengths, or needles sized to obtain proper gauge. Magic loop method may be used as an alternative to longer circular needles. Additional notions include stitch markers, a cable needle, stitch holders or scrap yarn for holding stitches, a tapestry needle for finishing, and 2 buttons for the button details.

Difficulty Level

This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle seamless garment construction and more complex stitch patterns. The top-down seamless method and yoke shaping require attention to detail and understanding of increases and pattern work, but the clear construction method provides an enjoyable learning experience.
