Miach Crochet Jacket by Caroline Murphy

What Is Being Made

Miach is an intermediate-level crochet jacket designed by Caroline Murphy. This garment features a finished bust measurement of 101.5cm (40 inches) with a length from shoulder of 43cm (17 inches) and sleeve length from underarm of 48.25cm (19 inches). The jacket is constructed using a modular square-based approach, making it an excellent project for crocheters looking to build garments from geometric units.

Crochet Techniques Used

The Miach jacket employs several fundamental crochet techniques to create its structure. The pattern utilizes the granny square method, a classic modular construction technique where individual squares are crocheted and then joined together to form larger fabric panels. The back panel is built by creating a first square and then expanding outward through additional rounds, with contrasting yarn colors introduced to add visual interest and definition to the geometric pattern.

The construction method involves working in rounds from a center chain ring, which is a common approach for creating seamless or nearly seamless garment sections. The pattern incorporates chain spaces and corner increases to shape the squares, allowing them to lay flat and connect smoothly with adjacent units.

Stitches Used

  • Chain (ch): The foundation stitch used to create the initial ring and build height between rows
  • Double crochet (dc): The primary fabric stitch that creates the body of each square and provides structure to the jacket
  • Single crochet (sc): Used for finishing and edging work to create a neat, refined border
  • Slip stitch (ss): Employed to join rounds and connect squares together, creating a cohesive garment
  • Chain spaces (ch-sp): Decorative openings created by chains that form corner details and visual breaks in the stitch pattern

Materials and Yarn Requirements

The Miach jacket requires approximately 1,200 metres (1,313 yards) of DK weight yarn in assorted colors. DK yarn, also known as light worsted or 8-ply, is a versatile medium weight that works well for garments requiring drape and definition without excessive bulk. The pattern calls for using assorted colors, which aligns with the modular construction and allows crocheters to create a multicolored or color-blocked effect across the jacket's surface.

Two crochet hook sizes are specified: a 5mm hook is used for the main fabric construction to achieve the required tension of 16 stitches and 7 rows over 10cm (4 inches), while a 4mm hook is used for finishing edgings to create a tighter, more refined border. The pattern is written using American crochet terminology, making it accessible to crocheters familiar with US stitch abbreviations.

Difficulty Level

Rated as intermediate, the Miach jacket is suitable for crocheters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle garment construction. The modular square approach makes the project manageable by breaking it into smaller, repeatable units, though assembling multiple squares and shaping a wearable jacket requires understanding of garment structure and some experience with finishing techniques.
