Product Description
Meristem features a botanical motif of sprouting leaves. The mittens begin with a ribbed cuff worked in the round that transitions into the Meristem pattern at the back of the hand, while continuing in ribbing on the inner wrist for a more comfortable fit. The palm of the hand is worked in stockinette stitch and a gusset is used to create extra fabric for the thumb specifically for right and left hands. The botanical motif continues to the tip of the fingers, where the stitches are decreased and grafted together to form a rounded mitten top.
Meristem Botanical Mittens by Maria Montzka
What is Being Made
Meristem is a pair of knitted mittens designed by Maria Montzka and published by Stitched in Sweden. These mittens are available in two sizes: Adult Small and Adult Medium, fitting hand circumferences of 7.5 inches (19 cm) and 8 inches (20.5 cm) respectively. The finished mitten length is adjustable, ranging from 10.5 inches (26.5 cm) to 11 inches (28 cm) from cuff to tip. The mittens are designed to be worn with slight negative ease or zero ease at hand circumference, creating a snug, well-fitting garment.
Techniques Used
The Meristem mittens employ several key knitting techniques appropriate for beginner-level crafters. The pattern utilizes twisted stitches (knit and purl through the back loop), which add textural interest and are worked throughout the design. Yarn overs and backwards yarn overs are incorporated to create decorative elements, with specific instructions provided for proper yarn positioning. The pattern also includes decreases worked through the back loop to shape the mitten, particularly toward the tip. The construction method uses circular needles or double-pointed needles, allowing for seamless knitting in the round—a fundamental technique for mittens that eliminates the need for seaming.
Stitches Used
The stitch abbreviations specified in the Meristem pattern include:
- k – knit stitch
- p – purl stitch
- k1b – knit one stitch through the back loop (twisted knit)
- p1b – purl one stitch through the back loop (twisted purl)
- k2tog – knit 2 stitches together (right-leaning decrease)
- ssk – slip, slip, knit (left-leaning decrease worked through the back loop)
- yo – yarn over (eyelet increase)
- byo – backwards yarn over (decorative increase)
These stitches combine to create a pattern that balances texture, shaping, and visual interest suitable for knitters developing their fundamental skills.
Materials
The Meristem mittens require approximately 220 yards (200 meters) of fingering weight yarn for the Small size, with 260 yards (240 meters) needed for the Medium size. The photographed sample was knitted in Knitted Wit Victory Sock in the colorway Golden Delicious. Needles required are US 2 (2.75mm) circular or double-pointed needles, which are the appropriate gauge for fingering weight yarn and create the proper fabric density for fitted mittens. The use of fingering weight yarn and small needles produces a dense, durable fabric ideal for hand-wear garments.
