Product Description
This pattern is written in U.K. terms and we will be using the basic granny square pattern for this blanket. It’s an easy pattern for beginners and loved by experienced crafters too. Making granny squares is very satisfying and when making multiple granny squares you can make this simple yet effective vintage inspired blanket. There are many variations of the granny square, this is my method. My new pattern includes a join-as-you-go (JAYG) tutorial with step by step pictures and instructions
Merino Granny Blanket by Eight-by-Six
Project Overview
The Merino Granny Blanket is a beginner-friendly crochet blanket project designed by Amanda Hurrell of Eight-by-Six. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a luxurious throw blanket measuring approximately 92 x 132 cm, constructed using classic granny square motifs worked in soft merino wool yarn.
What Is Being Made
This project produces a large crochet blanket composed of granny squares joined together to form a finished throw. The blanket is designed as a family-friendly project that combines traditional granny square construction with premium yarn to create a soft, durable, and long-lasting textile suitable for regular use and washing.
Crochet Techniques and Stitches
The pattern utilizes granny square construction, one of the most fundamental and recognizable crochet techniques. Granny squares are worked in the round and traditionally feature open lacework patterns created through combinations of chain stitches and cluster stitches. This beginner-level pattern makes it an ideal project for crocheters learning or reinforcing their foundational skills while still producing a sophisticated finished piece.
Materials Required
Yarn: Debbie Bliss Rialto DK, 100% extrafine merino wool. This yarn is available in 37 colors and comes in 50g balls with 105 meters of yardage per ball. The pattern includes some discontinued colorways, so color selection may vary depending on current yarn availability.
Hook: UK 4mm crochet hook is recommended for this project.
Additional Notions: The pattern references using a needle minder for organization during the project.
Yarn Characteristics and Properties
Debbie Bliss Rialto DK merino wool is specifically chosen for this blanket project due to its exceptional qualities. Merino wool is recognized as the softest and loftiest of all sheep wools, providing a luxurious feel against the skin. The Rialto DK yarn combines this softness and loft with a firm twist that enhances stitch definition, allowing the granny square pattern to display crisp, clear stitch work. This yarn is described as a workhorse yarn that provides durability and longevity, making it ideal for blankets that will be used frequently and laundered regularly.
Tension and Finished Dimensions
The pattern specifies a tension of 22 stitches to 30 rows over a 10cm x 10cm square. Maintaining this tension is important for achieving the intended finished blanket size of approximately 92 x 132 centimeters.
Care Instructions
The finished blanket is machine washable at 40 degrees, with cool tumble dry recommended. The blanket can be pressed with a cool iron if needed and is also suitable for dry cleaning, making it a practical choice for a frequently-used family blanket.
Difficulty Level
Rated as a beginner level project, this blanket is accessible to crocheters new to the craft while producing a polished, professional-looking finished piece. The repetitive nature of granny square construction makes it an excellent project for building confidence and muscle memory in basic crochet techniques.
