Product Description
Mended Fences is a delicate shawl comprised of simple shells and lovers/solomons knots.
Lovers/Solomons knot may look a difficult stitch but it is in fact a simple stitch and works up quickly. The results of combining shells and knots together is quite satisfying.
The pattern is a two row repeat and best results are achieved with a light fingering weight yarn. I used Alize Angora Gold for mine. Success has been achieved with this pattern in several other yarns including Lion Brand Shawl in a ball.

Mended Fences Shawl by Auburncraft Crochet Design
Project Overview
The Mended Fences Shawl is an intermediate-level crochet design featuring the distinctive Lovers Knot stitch, also known as Solomon's Knot. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a beautiful shawlette using lace-weight yarn, resulting in an elegant, lightweight accessory perfect for layering or draping.
What Is Being Made
This pattern produces a crocheted shawl constructed with a shell-based border design. The shawl features repeating shell points along its edges and uses a modular construction approach, allowing crafters to adjust the width by working additional shell multiples.
Techniques and Special Stitches
The Mended Fences Shawl showcases the Lovers Knot stitch (also called Solomon's Knot) as its signature technique. This special stitch creates textured, decorative elements throughout the pattern. The design incorporates traditional crochet techniques including:
- Shell stitch groups forming the primary structural element
- Lovers Knot/Solomon's Knot stitches worked in groups of four between each shell
- Double crochet and treble crochet stitches for foundation and shaping
- Chain stitches that count as working stitches within the pattern
Stitches Used
The pattern employs the following crochet stitches:
- Lk (Lovers Knot/Solomon's Knot) – The signature decorative stitch creating texture and visual interest
- Dc (Double Crochet) – Used for structure and foundation work
- Tr (Treble Crochet) – Incorporated into shell groups (tr3 formations) for height and drape
- Ch (Chain) – Creates spaces and counts as active stitches throughout
Construction Notes
The shawl is built using a repeating pattern structure where each row consists of groups of four Lovers Knots positioned between shell elements. The shell points refer to the side tips of the border shells, which form the decorative edge. To increase shawl width, the pattern uses multiples of six shells plus one additional shell, providing flexibility for customizing the finished size.
Materials Required
This pattern calls for lace-weight yarn in a light fingering 3-ply construction. The recommended yarn is Alize Angora Gold in Colour 5698, with each 100-gram ball providing approximately 601 yards (550 meters). The complete shawl requires approximately 1038 yards (950 meters) of yarn, making it a two-ball project.
The pattern is worked with a 5mm/H crochet hook, suitable for the lace-weight yarn specified.
Pattern Tips for Success
For optimal results, the pattern recommends keeping Lovers Knots and Solomon's Knots consistently the same size throughout the project. Working stitches into the top of the Lovers Knots and making them firm creates a neater finished appearance. Stitch placement should be precise, working into either the joining part or the actual knot of each stitch as directed by the pattern instructions.
