Product Description
This is a shawl/wrap that I've been wearing so much in these stay at home times. After seeing all the pocket shawls around I went and added pockets to mine. The pockets added to the shawl coziness. I am enjoying wearing this piece so much, I decided to write up the pattern. Hope you enjoy making and wearing this one.
With a size of 19" by 76", this shawl can be comfortably wrapped around the shoulder. And the tassels make it fun to wear
Enjoy!
Matam Pocket Shawl by Hookoflove
What Is Being Made
The Matam Pocket Shawl is a rectangular crocheted shawl featuring two functional pockets integrated into the design. This downloadable PDF pattern from independent designer Hookoflove creates a versatile accessory suitable for various occasions. The finished shawl measures 19 inches in width and 76 inches in length without fringe, making it a generous wrap-style piece.
Construction and Design
The Matam Shawl uses a straightforward rectangular construction method. The pattern begins with a foundation chain that establishes the width of the shawl, then progresses upward to the desired length. The instructions are organized into three distinct sections, with the middle section consisting of repeating rows. This modular approach allows crafters to customize the shawl's final length by adjusting the number of repeats in the middle section—additional repeats create a longer shawl, while fewer repeats produce a shorter version. The two pockets are seamlessly incorporated throughout the construction.
Crochet Stitches and Techniques
This beginner-friendly pattern employs several fundamental and intermediate crochet stitches to create visual interest and texture:
- Chain (ch) – The foundation stitch used to begin the shawl and create openwork elements throughout
- Double crochet (dc) – A primary stitch that forms the body of the shawl and creates structure
- Single crochet (sc) – Used for specific sections and detail work
- Back loop single crochet (blsc) – Applied to create textured rows by working into only the back loop of stitches
- Cross double crochet – A decorative stitch technique made with 3 stitches where the middle stitch is left unworked, creating a crossed effect by skipping 2 stitches, making a double crochet in the third stitch, chaining 1, then working a double crochet from the front into the first previously skipped stitch
The pattern also incorporates spacing techniques such as skipping stitches and creating chain spaces to develop an open, airy fabric suitable for a shawl.
Materials and Yarn Requirements
The Matam Pocket Shawl is designed to work with DK weight yarn, though the pattern accommodates both aran and worsted weight yarns for flexibility. The project requires approximately 1123 yards of yarn total. A 5.5 mm crochet hook is recommended for the specified yarn weights. The pictured shawl shown in the pattern was created using Lion Brand Heartland yarn in the Grand Canyon colorway, requiring 4.5 skeins to complete the full 76-inch length.
Skill Level
This pattern is rated as beginner difficulty, making it an excellent choice for crocheters new to shawl construction or those looking to expand their stitch repertoire with manageable complexity. The repeating row structure and clear abbreviations support crafters in following the instructions with confidence.
