Marley Tote Bag by Jen Dwyer
Project Overview
The Marley Tote Bag is a beginner-friendly crochet project designed by Jen Dwyer of Teal & Finch. This versatile 2-in-1 pattern offers crafters the flexibility to create a finished tote bag with either short or long handles, making it adaptable to different carrying preferences and style choices. The design is worked using two skeins of yarn held double throughout, creating a sturdy, structured bag suitable for everyday use.
Construction Technique
The Marley Tote Bag is constructed using crochet techniques worked in the round, which creates a seamless base for the bag body. By holding two skeins of yarn together as you work, you achieve increased fabric density and durability without requiring a larger hook size. This doubling technique is an efficient method for creating substantial, professional-looking pieces while maintaining beginner-level stitch complexity. Once the main body is complete, crafters select between two handle options—short or long—to customize the finished bag to their preferences.
Stitches and Stitch Pattern
The pattern employs a simple stitch pattern that remains accessible to beginners while producing an attractive, textured fabric. The straightforward stitch work, combined with the in-the-round construction method, allows newer crocheters to build confidence while completing a functional, wearable item.
Materials and Yarn Requirements
This project requires a total of 912 yards of yarn in two contrasting colors (456 yards per color). The pattern calls for #4/Medium weight yarn, with cotton blend fiber recommended for optimal drape and durability. The original sample shown uses Lion Brand RE-UP, an 85% cotton and 15% polyester blend, worked with 4 skeins each of ecru and grey (or ecru and black), with each skein providing 114 yards. A 6.0mm crochet hook and a tapestry needle for weaving in ends complete the required supplies.
Finished Specifications
The gauge for this project is 6.5 inches, which helps determine the finished dimensions and drape of the completed tote bag.
Skill Level
Rated as a beginner project, the Marley Tote Bag is designed to be accessible to newer crocheters while producing a polished, professional-looking result suitable for gifting or personal use.
