Market Bag Knit Pattern by Helga Mandl
Project Overview
The Market Bag is an intermediate-level knitting pattern designed by Helga Mandl. This downloadable PDF pattern provides instructions for creating a practical, seamless market bag using sport weight yarn. The bag is constructed in the round from the bottom up, eliminating the need for seaming during the main body construction, which simplifies the building process for knitters with intermediate experience.
What Is Being Made
This pattern creates a functional market bag suitable for shopping or everyday carrying. The bag is knit as one continuous piece in the round, with a strap that is knit separately and then attached to the opposite side using a preferred seaming method. The seamless construction method results in a polished, professional-looking finished product.
Knitting Techniques Used
The Market Bag pattern employs several fundamental and intermediate knitting techniques:
- Knitting in the round using circular needles and double-pointed needles
- Increases using the Make One Right (M1R) technique and yarn over (yo) methods
- Decreases using knit two stitches together (k2tog) and slip, slip, knit (ssk) techniques
- Working through back loop only (tblo) for specific stitch variations
- Seaming techniques to attach the knit strap to the completed bag body
Stitches Used
The pattern utilizes a straightforward combination of essential knitting stitches:
- k – knit stitch, the fundamental forward stitch
- p – purl stitch, the reverse of the knit stitch
- M1R – make one right increase, used to add stitches with a directional lean
- yo – yarn over, creating decorative holes and increasing stitch count
- k2tog – knit two stitches together, a right-leaning decrease
- ssk – slip, slip, knit, a left-leaning decrease created by slipping two stitches individually as if to knit, then inserting the left needle into the fronts of both stitches and knitting them together
- tblo – through back loop only, a stitch variation that creates texture and altered stitch appearance
Materials and Yarn
The Market Bag pattern calls for 2 skeins of 100% mercerized cotton in sport weight yarn, with each skein containing 50g (1.75 oz) and measuring 125m (137 yards). Mercerized cotton is a durable, breathable fiber ideal for bags and everyday accessories. The pattern suggests several compatible yarn options including Scheepjes Catona, Patons Grace, and Schachenmayr Catania, all of which are sport weight cotton yarns suitable for this project.
Tools and Notions
To complete this project, knitters will need the following tools and supplies:
- Size 4mm double-pointed needles for working sections in the round
- Size 4mm circular knitting needles, 60 cm long, for the main bag body construction
- Size 4mm crochet hook (optional) for finishing or alternative techniques
- Stitch marker to indicate the beginning of each round
- Tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends
- Scissors for cutting yarn
Pattern Notes
Gauge is not critical for this market bag pattern, making it an accessible project for knitters who may struggle with achieving precise gauge. The seamless, bottom-up construction method means the bag is knit continuously in one piece without requiring seaming during the main body work, reducing complexity. The strap is knit separately and then attached using a seaming method of the knitter's choice, allowing for personalization based on individual preference and skill level.
