Marja Cardigan by Ashley Knowlton
Garment Overview
Marja is an intermediate-level knitted cardigan designed by Ashley Knowlton. This downloadable PDF pattern offers nine finished bust sizes ranging from 29.5 inches (75 cm) to 61.5 inches (156.5 cm), with finished lengths between 24.5 inches (62 cm) and 28.25 inches (72 cm). The cardigan is constructed using lace weight or light fingering weight yarn, making it an elegant, delicate garment suitable for layering or wearing as a lightweight outer piece.
Construction and Techniques
Marja is knitted using circular needles, which allows for seamless construction and the flexibility to work flat or in the round depending on pattern sections. The design employs both US 5 (3.75mm) and US 4 (3.5mm) circular needles, with the smaller gauge used for ribbed edgings and the larger for the main fabric. The pattern utilizes double-pointed needles (dpns) as an optional alternative for sleeve construction, offering knitters flexibility in their preferred technique. The cardigan features button closures, with twelve ½-inch (12mm) buttons specified for fastening.
Yarn and Materials
The Marja cardigan requires between 1500 and 3650 yards (1370 to 3340 meters) of lace weight or light fingering weight yarn, depending on the finished size selected. The pattern sample was created using Wollmeise Lacegarn, a 100% Superwash Merino yarn in the colorway Ruby Thursday. This yarn provides 1575 meters (1722 yards) per 300-gram skein, offering excellent stitch definition and a luxurious drape characteristic of fine merino fiber.
Required Notions and Tools
- US 5 (3.75mm) circular needle, minimum 32 inches (80 cm) long
- US 4 (3.5mm) circular needle, minimum 32 inches (80 cm) long
- US 5 (3.75mm) double-pointed needles (optional, for sleeve construction)
- Twelve ½-inch (12mm) buttons

Skill Level and Pattern Complexity
Classified as an intermediate-level pattern, Marja requires knitters to be comfortable with circular needle techniques, lace weight yarn manipulation, and button band finishing. The use of lace weight yarn demands attention to tension and stitch clarity, while the cardigan construction involves managing multiple sections and integrating button bands seamlessly into the finished garment.
