Product Description
We don’t learn much about Margaret Dashwood in Jane Austen’s novel Sense & Sensibility. Poor Margaret spends much of her time in the shadow of her older sisters, Elinor & Marianne. We do know, however, that she shares the same sense and romantic nature with her dear mother and her older sister Marianne…with a dash of the common sense shown by Elinor.
The Dashwoods’ new home and the turn of events leaving Margaret at home by the seashore wishing for adventure are the inspiration for Margaret Dashwood’s Shawlette.
The shawl has a large area of Stockinette Stitch, making it a good project for folks just learning how to do lace stitches. In fact, I plan to give this to a young friend of mine with some nice yarn as her Christmas present...along with a gift certificate for lace lessons with me. :)
This is a pretty quick knit, makes for a very nice sized wrap (long enough to wrap around the neck to keep cozy, but not bulky).

What is Being Made
Margaret Dashwood's Shawlette is a knitted shawlette pattern inspired by Jane Austen's novel Sense and Sensibility. This garment is a smaller shawl design that combines the romantic sensibility of the character Margaret Dashwood with practical wearability. The shawlette is designed as an intermediate-level knitting project, making it accessible to knitters with some experience while still offering engaging construction techniques.
Knitting Techniques Used
The pattern employs travelling stitches as a primary design element, which creates visual interest and texture throughout the shawlette. Travelling stitches are a decorative knitting technique where stitches move diagonally across the fabric, producing elegant lines that flow across the piece. This technique requires attention to stitch manipulation and careful following of pattern instructions, making it well-suited to the intermediate skill level of this design.
Stitches and Construction
While specific stitch abbreviations are not detailed in the available pattern excerpt, the travelling stitches form the foundation of the shawlette's visual design. The pattern is structured to guide knitters through the construction process with clear instructions appropriate for intermediate-level crafters who understand basic knitting stitches and are ready to explore more decorative stitch techniques.
Materials
- Yarn Weight: 4-ply yarn, a lightweight fingering-weight yarn that creates delicate, refined fabric suitable for shawlettes
- Needles: Knitting needles appropriate for 4-ply yarn (specific needle size to be confirmed in full pattern)
Design Inspiration
The shawlette draws thematic inspiration from Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility, specifically the character Margaret Dashwood. The pattern notes reflect on Margaret's character—her romantic nature balanced with common sense, and her journey of resilience. This literary connection adds a meaningful dimension to the knitting project, appealing to crafters who appreciate both fine needlework and classic literature.
