Product Description
These simple fingerless mitts are knit from th to the top with a fingering weight yarn. You can knit them in the way you prefer: I knitted them flat (with the help of doble pointed needles for the thumb gusset) but, if you prefer, you can knit them in the round.
They are suitable for both genders, depending on the colors you choose (I used two colors: a solid one and a gradient).
The pattern is available in many sizes (adults and kids) and languages (English, French and Italian).
Happy knitting! Arancia
Mare del Nord Mitts by Arancia Cannella
What is Being Made
The Mare del Nord mitts are a pair of knitted mittens designed for adults and children. This intermediate-level knitting project creates fitted mittens available in three adult sizes (S, M, L) and two children's sizes (4-7 years and 8-11 years). The finished mittens measure approximately 15-17 cm in circumference when unstretched, with a height of 18-20 cm for adults and 15-17 cm for children, making them suitable for everyday wear in cooler weather.
Techniques Used
The Mare del Nord mitts are constructed using fundamental knitting techniques appropriate for intermediate crafters. The pattern is worked flat on straight needles and then sewn together, rather than being knitted in the round from the start. This construction method simplifies the knitting process while still producing a finished mitten. The pattern incorporates increases and decreases to shape the mittens, and uses stitch markers to help track pattern repeats and maintain consistent shaping throughout the project.
Stitches Used
The Mare del Nord mitts utilize three primary stitch patterns:
- Garter Stitch: Created by knitting every row, this textured stitch provides structure and elasticity to the mittens
- Stockinette Stitch: Formed by knitting on the right side and purling on the wrong side, this classic smooth stitch creates the main body fabric
- Eyelet Stitch: A decorative openwork pattern created using yarn overs and knit two together decreases, adding visual interest and a refined detail to the design
Additional stitch techniques include yarn over (YO) for creating eyelets and lace elements, knit two together (K2tog) for decreasing, and make 1 (M1) for increasing stitches as needed for proper shaping.
Materials and Gauge
The Mare del Nord mitts are designed to work with sport weight yarn and can be created using any yarn that knits to the specified gauge. The designer, Arancia Cannella, used Sesia Mistral baby yarn (100% new merino wool) in two coordinating blue shades: a mélange blue (Color A) and solid blue (Color B), with less than one 50-gram ball required of each color. The pattern calls for 3 mm (US size 3) straight needles for the flat construction and 3 mm (US size 3) double pointed needles for finishing. The gauge is 28 stitches and 39 rows in stockinette stitch over 10 x 10 cm. Additional supplies needed include stitch markers, scissors, and a tapestry needle for seaming and weaving in ends.
