What is Being Made
The March Flowers Mitts are a pair of cheerful spring mittens designed to keep hands warm during chilly spring days. These mitts feature decorative tulip motifs and are available in two adult sizes: S/M and L. The finished circumference measures approximately 7¾ inches (18 cm) for the smaller size and 8¾ inches (22.5 cm) for the larger size, with a finished length of 5¾ inches (14.5 cm) for size S/M and 6½ inches (16.5 cm) for size L.
Techniques and Construction
These mitts are worked in the round using circular needles or double-pointed needles, making them seamless and comfortable to wear. The pattern is classified as intermediate skill level and incorporates several key techniques:
- Stranded colorwork in the cuff section creates the foundation for the decorative design
- Afterthought thumb construction, which allows for easy thumb placement and adjustment
- Charted tulip options with two different designs that can be mixed and matched for personalization
- Optional Alternate Cable Cast On for a polished edge, with Long Tail Cast On offered as a suitable alternative
- Tubular Bind Off technique for a professional, stretchy finish
Stitches Used
The mitts begin with a k1, p1 ribbing pattern that provides stretch and structure at the cuff. The main body incorporates stranded colorwork techniques to create the charted tulip designs, which add visual interest and dimension to the finished mittens.
Materials Required
These mitts are worked in fingering weight yarn, making them lightweight and suitable for spring wear. The yardage requirements are modest: approximately 130 yards (119 m) of main color (MC) for size S/M and 165 yards (151 m) for size L, along with 20 yards (18 m) of contrast color 1 (CC1) for size S/M and 26 yards (24 m) for size L. An additional 10 yards (9 m) of a second contrast color is needed for size S/M and 13 yards (12 m) for size L. The pattern is worked on US size appropriate circular needles or double-pointed needles measuring 32 inches (80 cm).
