Product Description
This little cupcake is fun and practical to make as only minimal seaming is required. The main cupcake is knitted in one piece from the bottom upwards, with just one seam to sew. Three double pins are used from rows 7-12, to ease the tension from multiple increases (not knitted in the round).
Base is worked in DK yarn, top can be any fluffy yarn of your choice. Little DK yarn flowers with beaded centres are added to finish.
Many Flowered Cupcake by Louisa Noble
What is Being Made
The Many Flowered Cupcake is a knitted toy designed by Louisa Noble that creates a charming, three-dimensional cupcake decoration. The finished piece measures approximately 5cm in diameter at the base and stands about 6cm high. This project is ideal for crafters seeking to create a whimsical, decorative amigurumi-style toy with a realistic cupcake appearance.
Construction Method
The cupcake is constructed in one continuous piece, worked from the bottom upwards. This efficient building method minimizes finishing work, as the design requires only one seam to be sewn at the completion of the project. The strategic use of double-pointed needles allows for seamless circular knitting, and the pattern incorporates double pins starting from the 7th row to manage stitch shaping during the middle sections of the construction.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
This intermediate-level knitting project employs several fundamental techniques to achieve its three-dimensional form:
- Increases (Inc 1): Created by knitting into both the front and back of a single stitch, this technique is used extensively throughout the bottom section to expand the base from 5 stitches to 33 stitches, creating the rounded foundation of the cupcake
- Knit stitch (K): Used for shaping rows on the right side
- Purl stitch (P): Worked on alternating rows to create texture and structure
- Double-pointed needle knitting: Enables seamless, circular construction without requiring a seam along the sides
- Stuffing and shaping: The piece is filled with fiberfill stuffing to create dimension and support the cupcake form
Materials Required
The Many Flowered Cupcake requires a combination of yarn weights and specialty materials to achieve its distinctive appearance:
- DK weight yarn: 50g in white for the cupcake base structure, and 30g in one contrasting DK colour for accent details
- Fluffy or eyelash yarn: 50g for the icing, which creates the characteristic round, textured appearance of frosting when knitted
- Needles: A pair of size 11 (3mm) double-pointed needles for the main construction, with 3 additional double pins of the same size (3mm) for managing stitches during shaping
- Embellishments: 6 beads measuring 5mm in a contrasting colour, with one bead positioned per flower for decorative detail
- Additional materials: A small piece of stiff cardboard for internal structure and polyester fiberfill or similar stuffing material to fill the completed toy
Difficulty Level
This project is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle shaping techniques and three-dimensional construction. The pattern requires understanding of increases, double-pointed needle techniques, and the ability to manage multiple needles simultaneously.
