What is Being Made

Manny the Bee is a knitted toy designed by Sarah Louise Read of Stitch Witch Creations. This intermediate-level knitting project creates a stuffed bee character that measures approximately 12 inches tall when sitting, measured from the bottom of the body to the top of the antenna. The finished toy is suitable for display, play, or gifting.

Craft and Primary Technique

This pattern uses knitting as the primary construction method. The toy is created by knitting individual body parts separately and then assembling them through seaming. This modular approach allows crafters to work on manageable pieces before joining them together to form the complete bee character.

Stitches and Techniques Used

The pattern employs fundamental knitting stitches and shaping techniques suitable for intermediate-level crafters:

• Knit stitch (K) – the basic foundation stitch used throughout the pattern
• Purl stitch (P) – used to create textured sections and reverse stockinette details
• Stockinette stitch (St st) – the primary fabric construction combining knit and purl rows for a smooth, finished appearance
• Knit front and back (Kfb) – an increase technique used to expand stitch counts for shaping body parts
• Knit two together (K2tog) – a decrease technique for shaping and tapering sections
• Purl two together (P2tog) – a purl-based decrease used for structured shaping

These techniques combine to create three-dimensional shaping, allowing the flat knitted pieces to form the bee's head, body, wings, and antennae.

Materials and Tools

Manny the Bee is worked using aran-weight yarn, which provides excellent stitch definition and creates a sturdy finished toy. The pattern calls for Stylecraft Special Aran yarn in three colors:

• 75 grams of Black aran yarn – the primary color for the bee's body stripes and details
• 35 grams of Yellow aran yarn – used for the bee's head and body sections
• 25 grams of White aran yarn – incorporated for facial features and accent details

Construction requires 4mm knitting needles for working with the aran-weight yarn. Additional materials include a tapestry needle for seaming the individual pieces together, polyester stuffing to fill the toy and create its three-dimensional form, and two 12mm safety eyes for the bee's face. Crafters should prepare a tail of yarn before casting on each body part to facilitate seaming seams later in the assembly process.
