Mandala Sun Top Crochet Pattern
What is Being Made
The Mandala Sun Top is an advanced crochet garment designed by Izabela Firlová. This top features a striking sun mandala motif as its centerpiece, with the design constructed by working outward from the mandala element to create the cup shaping and body of the garment. The finished piece is available in three sizes: Size S measures 80 cm (31.5 inches), Size M measures 90 cm (35.5 inches), and Size L measures 100 cm (39.5 inches) in circumference.
Construction Techniques
The Mandala Sun Top employs a unique construction method that begins with the sun mandala as the focal point. Rather than working in traditional rows with frequent turning, the crocheter works continuously around the mandala element, building the cup shaping and progressing toward the bottom of the garment. Turning is only performed when specifically indicated in the pattern instructions, allowing for seamless circular construction in most sections. The sun mandala itself is sized at 22 cm (8.6 inches) when worked with a 3.5 mm hook, or 20 cm (7.9 inches) when incorporating treble crochet stitches.
Stitches Used
This advanced pattern incorporates a range of crochet stitches to create texture and structure:
- Chain stitch (ch) – the foundation stitch used throughout the pattern
- Slip stitch (ss) – used for joining and seamless transitions
- Single crochet (sc) – a basic short stitch for tight fabric
- Double crochet (dc) – a medium-height stitch created with yarn wrapped once around the hook
- Treble crochet (tr) – a taller stitch made with yarn wrapped twice around the hook
- Double treble crochet (dtr) – an extra-tall stitch created with yarn wrapped three times around the hook
- Puff stitch – a textured stitch formed by working three double crochets in a single stitch and fusing them together, used prominently in the sun mandala design
Materials and Yarn Requirements
The Mandala Sun Top is designed to be worked with sport weight yarn in either silk or cotton fiber content. For Size S, approximately 330 meters (360 yards) of yarn is required. A 3.5 mm crochet hook is used throughout the pattern, with a recommended gauge of 28 stitches to 29 rows. The pattern also calls for 5 decorative beads to be incorporated into the design, adding embellishment to the mandala element. These beads are positioned adjacent to chain stitches during the construction of the sun mandala motif.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is classified as advanced, making it suitable for experienced crocheters. The complexity arises from the intricate mandala construction, the use of multiple stitch heights, the incorporation of decorative beads, and the three-dimensional shaping required to create the cup and body of the top.
