Product Description
Mallaig is a fishing town in the western Highlands of Scotland. The motifs I have chosen for these socks were some of those documented on ganseys from this region by Gladys Thompson. The heavier yarn and gauge used here will make a rugged boot sock, perfect for hiking. The socks are knitted from the cuff to the toe in the round.

Mallaig Gansey Socks by Beth Brown-Reinsel
What Is Being Made
The Mallaig Gansey Socks are a pair of knitted boot socks inspired by traditional gansey motifs from the Western Scottish Highlands, specifically from the fishing town of Mallaig on Loch Hourn. These socks feature authentic historical patterns documented from ganseys of the Mallaig region by Gladys Thompson. The design celebrates the heritage of this Scottish fishing community, which experienced significant growth during the 1800s herring fishing era before economic changes in the early 1900s. The heavier yarn and gauge create a rugged, durable boot sock well-suited for hiking and outdoor activities.

Featured Knitting Techniques
This intermediate-level knitting project incorporates several essential sock-making techniques:
- Channel Island Cast-on — A specialized cast-on method that creates a flexible, finished edge ideal for sock cuffs
- Long Tail Cast-on — A versatile cast-on technique that provides both elasticity and structure
- Kitchener Stitch — A grafting technique used to seamlessly close the toe, creating a professional finish without a visible seam
Stitches and Stitch Work
The pattern employs charted motifs characteristic of traditional gansey design. Knitters will work from pattern charts to integrate the historical Highland patterns throughout the sock fabric. The construction uses standard sock stitches worked on double-pointed needles in the round, with the charted motifs creating texture and visual interest across the leg and foot sections.
Materials and Specifications
The Mallaig Gansey Socks are designed for DK weight yarn, which provides the heavier gauge necessary for creating sturdy, long-wearing boot socks. Knitters will need a set of 4 U.S. size 4 (3.5 mm) double-pointed needles (dpn), though needle size may be adjusted as needed to achieve the correct gauge. Additional notions include stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and tape measure for checking finished measurements.
Pattern Contents
The downloadable PDF includes complete garment directions, pattern charts for the gansey motifs, and abbreviations with bibliography references for further research into traditional Scottish sock patterns and the cultural history of the Mallaig region.
