Product Description
Maitri Mandala is a striped semicircular shawl overlaid with a star-like cable motif radiating from the centre. The star is gradually shifts into a sequence of unique striped, slipped stitch laces.
This design’s theme is compassion. The cable pattern is based on an old Celtic design sometimes called the mother and child knot. In Tibetan Buddhism, maitrimeans loving kindness or compassion, and forms a beautiful meditation practice. May we cradle ourselves with this same compassion, as a parent holds a child, and in doing so find that it is easier to be kind to others when we are kind to ourselves.
This design is ideal for 2 solids/semi-solids, a gradient and solid, or a gorgeous pair of dappled gradients, as pictured here.
Suits fingering weight yarn in any yardage between approx 700 - 900m.
Please note this design is charts only.
Maitri Mandala Shawl by Nim Teasdale
What Is Being Made
The Maitri Mandala is a striped semicircular shawl featuring a double cable motif that radiates from a central point in a star shape. The design combines geometric patterning with spiritual intention, drawing inspiration from a Celtic mother and child knot design and the Tibetan Buddhist concept of maitri, which means loving kindness or compassion. This downloadable knitting pattern creates a finished shawl measuring approximately 125x55cm.
Design Structure and Construction
The shawl begins with a central star made up of a series of wedges that widen every other stripe. As the knitter progresses outward from the center, the construction gradually shifts from the structured cable wedges into a series of unique slipped stitch striped laces. This transition from solid geometric motifs to delicate lace creates visual interest and demonstrates advanced shaping techniques.
Knitting Techniques Used
- Cable knitting: The double cable motif forms the foundation of the star shape at the shawl's center, based on traditional Celtic design principles
- Wedge increases: Strategic widening every other stripe creates the radiating star effect
- Slipped stitch lace: Delicate lace sections develop as the pattern expands outward from the center point
- Striped construction: Horizontal stripes are integrated throughout the design, combining with the cable and lace elements
- Semicircular shaping: The overall semicircular silhouette requires careful increases and stitch management across the entire piece
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
The Maitri Mandala employs a combination of fundamental and advanced stitches. Cable stitches form the structural centerpiece, while slipped stitches create the lace sections that develop as the shawl expands. The striped pattern is maintained throughout, requiring attention to color changes and stitch consistency across rows. The interplay between solid cables, slipped stitch laces, and stripes creates a complex visual pattern suitable for advanced knitters.
Yarn and Materials
The pattern calls for approximately 700-900 meters (750-1000 yards) of fingering or sport weight yarn. The pictured sample was knitted using 760 meters (830 yards) of Gobsmacked Four Quarter Fingering weight yarn. The shawl was worked on US size 3 (3.25mm) needles. Knitters are advised to adapt needle size to suit their preferred gauge, as this will affect the final dimensions and yardage requirements of the finished piece.
Difficulty Level
This is an advanced knitting pattern requiring solid understanding of cable techniques, lace construction, and complex stitch patterns. Knitters should be comfortable reading detailed charts, managing multiple stitch types simultaneously, and understanding how increases affect overall shaping. The combination of cables, slipped stitch laces, and stripes demands attention to detail and experience with intermediate-to-advanced techniques.
