Product Description

Arguably the most prestigious accomplishment for any professional cyclist is to wear the Maillot Jaune, the leader’s jersey of the Tour de France. Wearing the Yellow Jersey has inspired incredible feats of athletic prowess in attempts to keep it, protect it for the team, and get it back from an opponent. These socks include a flowery sunflower pattern, reminiscent of the fields of sunflowers often seen during the Tour, and a twisted stitch ribbed cuff. Including the Texas ornamentation on the heel flap is, of course, optional! Worked from the toe up, in sizes from XS (women’s 5-6) to XL (women’s 11+, men’s 10), these anklet socks use less then 200 yds of fingering weight yarn. Sample shown was knit in Cascade Fixation. Stitch patterns are presented in written and charted forms.

Skills needed: provisional casting on, knitting, purling, working in the round, increasing, twisted stitches, binding off. Gauge: 28 sts/48 rows over 4 in/10 cm in stockinette stitch.

Maillot Jaune Socks by Rachel Brown

Project Overview

Maillot Jaune is a downloadable knitting pattern for socks designed by Rachel Brown. Inspired by the prestigious yellow leader's jersey of the Tour de France, these socks celebrate cycling heritage through thoughtful design details. The pattern combines decorative lace work with functional construction, making it suitable for intermediate knitters seeking a project with both aesthetic appeal and technical interest.

What Is Being Made

This pattern produces a pair of socks featuring a flowery lace pattern throughout the leg and foot. The design draws inspiration from the sunflower fields visible during flat stages of the Tour de France, translating this iconic cycling imagery into a wearable textile. The socks include a twisted stitch ribbed cuff for structure and comfort at the leg opening. An optional Texas ornamentation detail on the heel flap allows knitters to customize their finished socks.

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

The pattern employs several intermediate-level knitting techniques appropriate for experienced beginners and beyond:

  • Stockinette stitch forms the base fabric, providing a smooth, classic sock foundation
  • Lace pattern creates the flowery design element, requiring yarn overs and decreases for openwork details
  • Twisted stitch ribbing constructs the cuff, adding visual interest and elasticity to the leg opening
  • Heel flap construction with optional Texas ornamentation for decorative personalization
  • Magic loop or double-pointed needles (dpns) technique for working in the round, with flexibility in needle choice

Materials and Specifications

Yarn: Cascade Fixation, a blend of 98.3% cotton and 1.7% elastic, provides breathability and recovery. The yarn is worked at a DK weight with a yardage of 100 yards (91 meters) per 50-gram ball. Two balls are required to complete the project.

Needles: US size 1 (2.25 mm) needles or the size needed to achieve proper gauge. The pattern accommodates both double-pointed needles and magic loop methods for circular knitting.

Gauge: 7.5 stitches and 12 rows per inch in stockinette stitch. Achieving correct gauge is essential for proper fit.

Sizing and Fit

The pattern includes five size options with approximate foot circumferences ranging from 8 inches (XS) to 9 inches (XL) when measured unstretched. Available sizes are XS, S, M, L, and XL. Sock length can be customized as desired, allowing knitters to adjust the finished height to personal preference.

Difficulty Level

Rated as intermediate, this pattern suits knitters with solid foundational skills who are comfortable working lace stitches and managing sock construction in the round. The combination of lace patterning and ribbed cuff construction provides technical challenge while remaining achievable for experienced knitters.
