Product Description
TWO FABULOUS VERSIONS – the CLASSIC neat neck-tie is elegant, soft and secure. The interlocking version in single rib is simple no-frills softness, whilst the FLARED tie opens into a sweet fichu end. These ties were named after the glorious abundant magnolia tree that bloomed lavishly in front of Belinda’s drawing room window.
Magnolia Necktie by Belinda Harris-Reid
What is Being Made
The Magnolia Necktie is a knitted neckwear accessory available in three distinct styles: a Classic neat neck-tie, an interlocking single rib version, and a Flared tie with a decorative fichu end. These elegant scarves are inspired by the magnolia tree that bloomed abundantly outside the designer's drawing room window. Each version offers a different aesthetic while maintaining the soft, secure qualities of hand-knitted neckwear suitable for adding sophistication to any outfit.
Techniques Used
This knitting project employs fundamental techniques appropriate for beginner-level crafters. The Classic and interlocking versions utilize basic ribbed knitting, which creates vertical texture and elasticity. The Flared version introduces yarn overs (abbreviated as "yo" in the pattern), a simple lace technique that creates decorative eyelet holes and allows the fabric to expand gracefully at the end. Slip stitch edges (abbreviated as "sl1") are used to create neat, finished selvage edges on all versions. The interlocking version requires dividing stitches to create a functional slot, adding minimal complexity while maintaining beginner accessibility.
Stitches Used
- Knit stitch (k) – the fundamental stitch forming the base structure
- Purl stitch (p) – used in alternation with knit stitches to create ribbed texture
- Slip stitch (sl1) – applied at the beginning of rows for clean, professional edges
- Yarn over (yo) – featured in the Flared version to create decorative eyelet increases and lace detailing
- Ribbing patterns – specifically (k1, p1) single rib and (k2, p2) double rib, which provide stretch and elegant vertical lines
Materials and Specifications
The Magnolia Necktie is knitted using aran weight yarn, a medium weight that works up quickly while providing excellent drape and warmth. Two yarn options are provided: Light Moonshine (225 meters per 100 grams) or standard Moonshine (166 meters per 100 grams), both composed of 70% alpaca, 20% silk, and 10% other fibers. This luxurious fiber blend creates a soft, lustrous finished garment with excellent insulation properties. One 100-gram ball of yarn is required to complete any version of the necktie. The pattern does not specify needle size, though aran weight typically works well on US 8–10 (5–6mm) needles. The Classic version begins with 36 cast-on stitches and measures 22 centimeters in length, while the interlocking version uses 34 cast-on stitches and extends to 62 centimeters. The Flared version increases to 42 stitches through yarn overs to create its distinctive widened end.
Design Features
Each Magnolia Necktie version offers distinct aesthetic and functional qualities. The Classic style provides an elegant, compact neckwear option with neat ribbed texture and secure fit. The interlocking single rib version emphasizes simplicity with straightforward ribbed construction and an interlocking slot mechanism for closure. The Flared version introduces visual interest through yarn-over lace increases that transform the tie into a sweet fichu-style end, creating a romantic, flowing silhouette. All versions benefit from the natural sheen and softness of the alpaca-silk blend, making them suitable for both everyday wear and special occasions.
