Magnifica Triangular Shawl by Wollelfe e.U.

What Is Being Made

Magnifica is a sideways knitted triangular shawl designed as a versatile layering piece perfect for colder summer evenings, beach wear, or everyday coziness. The finished shawl measures 230cm x 120cm (90" x 47") after hard blocking, making it a substantial wrap suitable for draping across shoulders or wearing as a lightweight cover-up.

Knitting Techniques

This pattern employs a sideways construction method, meaning the shawl is knitted from one corner outward rather than from the top down or bottom up. The sideways approach allows for strategic increases that shape the triangular silhouette. The pattern features increases worked every second row with absolutely no decreases, creating a gradual expansion that results in the triangular form. The increases are accomplished using the kfb (knit front and back) technique, which creates an extra stitch from a single stitch.

Stitch Patterns and Stitches Used

Magnifica incorporates three distinct stitch patterns worked in sequential order throughout the construction. A notable feature of this design is the complete absence of purl stitches—the entire shawl is worked using knit-based stitches only, making it an excellent beginner-friendly project. The stitch patterns include:

  • Pattern A: Basic garter stitch construction with increases, alternating knit rows on the right side with knit-all rows on the wrong side
  • Pattern B: A lace pattern combining k2tog (knit two together) decreases with yo (yarn over) increases to create openwork, maintaining the garter stitch base on wrong-side rows
  • Pattern C: A variation that introduces additional stitch complexity while maintaining the knit-only construction

The yarn overs and knit-two-together combinations in Pattern B create decorative lace elements that add visual interest while maintaining the structural integrity of the triangular shawl.

Yarn and Materials

Magnifica is designed to showcase two contrasting yarns worked together to create a personalized colorway. Color 1 requires 100g of yarn with a yardage of 400m (436yds), specified as a variegated yarn. Color 2 requires 150g of yarn with a yardage of 600m (656yds), specified as a gradient yarn. The pattern suggests Wollelfe Merino-Pure as an example yarn choice, indicating a 4-ply weight yarn suitable for this construction. The two-yarn approach allows crafters to customize their shawl by selecting complementary or contrasting colors and textures from their stash.

Needles and Tools

This pattern requires 3.5mm (US 4) circular needles in a length of 80–100cm (32"–42"). Circular needles are essential for this sideways construction method, as they accommodate the increasing number of stitches as the shawl expands from the initial corner.

Difficulty Level

Magnifica is rated as a beginner-level pattern, making it an accessible introduction to shawl knitting. The elimination of purl stitches simplifies the learning curve, while the straightforward increase-only construction and repeating stitch patterns provide a meditative, easy-to-follow knitting experience. Beginners can focus on mastering the basic techniques of yarn overs and knit-two-together decreases within the context of a beautiful, wearable finished object.
