Product Description
Mirrored waves ripple outwards in a subtle gradation in this modern lace shawl, designed by Nim Teasdale and based on Kieran Foley’s original MagicWaves pattern.
The stitches are not complex, but keeping them all flowing takes some attention, a sort of knitting meditation.
The shape can be blocked into a very deep point at the bottom, or the wings can be stretched outwards a little to form a slight curve at the upper edge.
The sample was knit on a 3.5mm/US4 needle with 470m/510yds of Wolle’s Yarn Creations Color Changing Cotton and measures 162x68cm (64x26in) after blocking.
Sizing is adaptable to any yardage of lace to fingering weight yarn. Gauge and needles will vary with yarn weight.
The pdf includes charts and a full written pattern.
MagicWaves Triangle Knitted Lace Shawl
What Is Being Made
The MagicWaves Triangle is a modern lace shawl designed by Nim Teasdale and based on Kieran Foley's original MagicWaves pattern. This triangular shawl features mirrored waves that ripple outwards in a subtle gradation, creating a dynamic visual effect. The shawl is adaptable in size and can be blocked into different shapes depending on your preference—either into a very deep point at the bottom or with wings stretched outwards to form a slight curve at the upper edge.
Techniques and Stitch Work
The MagicWaves Triangle employs lace knitting techniques that create flowing wave patterns throughout the design. While the individual stitches are not complex, maintaining the flow and rhythm of all stitches requires focused attention and mindful knitting practice. The pattern demonstrates specific decrease techniques that work in harmony with yarn overs:
- Decreases that consume a yarn over are worked to lean towards the yarn over, positioning the yarn over underneath the decrease
- Decreases that consume 2 knit stitches lean away from the yarn over, allowing the edge stitch to sit on top
These directional decrease choices create the subtle gradation and mirrored wave effect that defines the shawl's aesthetic appeal.
Materials and Specifications
The MagicWaves Triangle is designed with flexibility in mind for yarn selection and needle sizing. The pattern accommodates multiple yarn weights, making it suitable for various fiber options:
- Yarn Weight Options: Lace weight, fingering weight, sport weight, 3-ply, and 4-ply yarns
- Sizing: Adaptable to any yardage of lace to fingering weight yarn, allowing you to customize the finished shawl size
- Needles: Gauge and needle size will vary depending on your chosen yarn weight
This versatility means knitters can create the MagicWaves Triangle in their preferred yarn and adjust the final dimensions accordingly.
Difficulty Level
Rated as an intermediate knitting project, the MagicWaves Triangle is suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to explore lace patterns. The pattern requires attention to detail and consistent tension, but the stitches themselves remain accessible to intermediate-level crafters.
